I bought a small collection US coins here in Holland.. One of them is a dateless Standing Liberty quarter struck in Denver.. I know it's not 1916 because of the 3 star below the eagle.. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance..

Search on this forum for acid date nickel...I think they use an acid to date dateless nickels, but that's nickel not silver...the acid is a product specifically sold for this exact purpose...
Why does it work? The metal directly under the outline of the date is more compressed, work hardened, and resists the acid more than the softer, surrounding nickel. Again, this might not work for your application! Also, this may be considered PMD...but if it reveals the date, it might be worth the trade-off...

I don't know how to date a dateless SLQ, but:

What's this? Is it part of the date?

My eyes might be deceiving me, but I see a faint 0, making this a 1920D.

I'd start by asking her on a date.

Or soak in vinegar (appears to be very hit or miss, mostly miss).

Lastly, exposing to the correct concentration of the correct type of acid for the correct amount of time could help. I'm not sure I'd want to bother with it though. I'll link you to a thread that previously discussed this topic. http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...&whichpage=1

I don't believe anything can be done to raise the date on silver coins

Someone tried a few things in one of the threads that I can not find. If I recall, it would have been around a year ago. I do believe he had only limited success and using rather hazardous chemicals to get that far.

Nod: That was me. Had some success with Nitric Acid but not enough to warrant everyone running off to the chemical store. Also: I think I see what you see (faint "0") on Sander's coin, but I think it's just an anomoly. If you look at a 1920-D that has lots of detail it doesn't look like the 0 can be where you and I are seeing it. See photo below and compare to Sander's...

Likewise, I messed around with different chemicals, combinations, etc and never found anything that did a nice job at bringing out the date reproducibly- even on coins that look like the wear was not that bad. It would be sweet if somebody could figure this out, as I have lots of dateless mint marked SLQs waiting to be restored. The only thing I was successful in doing was removing small amounts of silver.

Ok, we all know that it is a Type II, made between 1917 and 1924 (non-recessed date). With potential dates to choose from (from the Denver Mint) 1917, 18, 19, 20 and 24.

Is this a "0" as in 1920?

Het was een poging, mooie munt in ieder geval.

I took the provided image and adjusted it to reveal better what looks like a zero, it looks like you can see a zero (top part of photo) I adjusted the other 1920 D photo provided and adjusted the size to try to match with the top photo and partly overlaid it on the bottom. It doesn't look like the zero lines up, but maybe someone else can comment. Maybe this doesn't do any good at all!

I think that the "zero" that I highlighted was the wrong shape anyway, more oblong than round.

They used to make silver-date, I think the same folks who make nic-a-date.
