I just spent $10 on a 1939 Large cent with the shoulder tip. I've been wanting one for a while and finally found one at a price I didn't mind spending. I'll post pictures once I get it in hand.

Right click and save the image from the auction, and of course we would like to see it! I am guessing that it is a 1839 Boobie Head Large Cent?

Looking forward to seeing it. I've been trying to get one for a while, the XF-AU condition I'm looking for doesn't come up too often.

Now he needs to find another one. Then he'll have a pair of boobies to play with.

Sorry for the delay, I had an unexpected family emergency. Anyways..... I got the coin and it has a bit of damage on the reverse, but for what I paid for it and the fact that it's a coin I've wanted for awhile, I'm not complaining.

"Boobie" is not in the CCF glossary, and looking at the pics, I can't guess ...

The 1839 Large cent had 4 variations.
There was the "Silly Head" which is noted by the lock of hair on the busts forehead
The 1839 over 1836 date which has the traditional matron head bust with plain cords in the hair
The 1839 with the head of the 1838 which has beaded cords in the hair.
And finally the "Boobie". The Boobie head has a shoulder tip at the rear of the bust and, quite frankly, has a goofy looking face.

In 1839 there were five different head types used on the cent, head of 36, head of 38, silly head, booby head, and head of 40 or Petite head. The head types were named back in the 1880's and no one knows why the silly and booby heads got those names. Head of 36 N-1 1839/6 R-3+ but expensive. The only head with the hair tied up with plain cords (this is a late die state) Head of 38 N-2,3 both common No prominent lock of hair at base of coronet and forehead. Hair tied up with a beaded cord. Silly Head N-4,9 Both common. Prominent lock of hair at base of coronet and forehead. Bottom right point of bust does not extend past hair wave, Booby Head N-5,6,7,10,11,12,13,14,and 15 N-5,6,7,10,11,13,and 14 are common to very common. N-12 is very scarce, N-15 is very rare. Prominent lock of hair at base of coronet and forehead. bottom right point of bust extends past wave of hair. Petite Head N-8 Head is redesigned and is now the Braided head design. The head is tipped forward with the point of the coronet by star 5 and the point of the bust over the 8 in the date.

Wow! I'm not a Large Cent fan or collector but that was interesting. Thanks for the info and pics.

I stand corrected, 5 variations. I didn't know about the fifth, thanks!
