I almost pulled the trigger on this book, [eBayItem]160766387247[/eBayItem] but I was at work and forgot about checking in, just as well as I have blown my book budget this month. I was thinking about bidding around $120.00 but wow did it ever jump the last hour, closing out at over $350.00. I seriously doubt it was Chapman's personal copy, did they even have avery stickers back then? Still an unusual binding and so close to the Nova Constellatio edition. Great shape for a book from 1875, and probably still a great deal at the price it sold for. It was a rebound copy obviously a little research dug up info on the bookbinder Ulrich Holzer he started in Boston in 1870. Holzer binding is still going strong today. http://www.holzerbindery.com/I think this was probably rebound in the 1920-1950's from the look of it, I didn't have time to contact Holzer to see what they thought of it before bidding. I know a current reprint can be had for under $50.00 from Richard Snow ( Indian cent man). Harry Bass Foundation lists several reprints over the years: Crosby, S. S. The Early Coins of America. Boston, 1875 (reprinted 1945, 1965, 1975), but the paper looks like an original 1875 version, I know it was also issued unbound, so maybe it happened to be one of those copies and was bound together at a later date by U. Holzer. EDIT - for more info: http://wiki.coinbooks.org/index.php...S_OF_AMERICA - List of all known printings, after perusing this I tend to think the ebay auction may have been from one of the original subscription sets, making it an absolute steal at that price! Probably worth $1K at a proper book auction - even with the minor damage. It's the quality of plates that are so important and this auction item looked liked the real deal, either original or 1875 Lyman Low or 1945 Ruth Green, rebound by Holzer. It probably wasn't the Estes Lauriat edition as the date was 1873 in the cover pages not 1875 per their change. "Buy the Book Before You Buy the Coin" - Aaron R. Feldman - "And read it" - Me 2013! Quote: It probably wasn't the Estes Lauriat edition as the date was 1873 in the cover pages not 1875 per their change. Mistake (facepalm) 1875 not 1878 per Estes Lauriat edition which it was NOT most definitely. I am pretty sure this was one of the original Subscription editions from Crosby himself in 1875-1876 then rebound after all the sections were completed and delivered, it may have been Chapman's working copy, but no way was the sticker stating that put on back when he was alive, maybe from a sale of Chapma's library, I know George Frederick Kolbe sold the entire Stack's Library of Numismatic Literature, but I don't have that auction catalogue to verify this copy. Stack's purchased most of Chapman's library, so if it was his there is a good chance it came out of that auction by George Frederick Kolbe. Sorry I didn't pay enough attention to this ebay auction, I probably would've put in a much higher bid than it ended up selling for, and I don't even collect Large cents with any real zeal - yet! I do know a bargain when I see one however and this was definitely a great one!
