I have an old edition (1999) Red Book, and it got me wondering: Is there any reason to keep old copies if I have a newer edition? Either way, I hate to throw out a good reference even if the prices are outdated. What do you do with them?

I believe there is a market for older red books. Hopefully someone with specific knowledge will be along.

A lot of people collect the entire set of Redbooks. I used to, but soon stopped as there are more important books I'd rather have in my library. The really early editions go for a bunch now, and complete sets sell for around $2000. For historical price reference they are interesting, but don't really reveal the true price of the markets like auction cataloges with prices realized sheets do.

My suggestion would be to keep the book. It doesn't take up much space on a bookshelf and it can occasionally provide some interesting comparisons to current pricing.

I agree, no reason to throw it away. If it is taking up too much space, find it a new home.

Picked up a 1962 Red Book for .50 cents last week at a garage sale. Fun to go through and check prices and dream about a time machine. Hang onto the book!

I guess I will keep it on the shelf. Ah, when the local coin shop had $10 Morgans...

A used book store near my house is going out of business so I went in and had a look around. I found about 50 old red books marked for 5.00 apiece plus 30% off. I picked out 6 of them to get a good spread of years and proceeded to the checkout line. When the cashier rang me up she told me it was also buy 4 get the 5th free. I got 6 red books (years 1964, 65, 70, 80, 85, and 91) for 17.50. I think they are going to be a great tool, plus it will be fun to look back and see what coins went for back in the day.

Hmm, that makes me think: it would be really interesting to see plots of different coin values over the years. There would probably be some surprising trends.

Check out the pricing on 1903 Morgan dollars in the 1940-1960's compared to today, that'll shock you.

@westcoin
Wow, that must have been distressing for the collectors which took so much time and effort to acquire one of these. That's a price trend you don't see often.

Just saw a first edition Volume One RedBook sell for over $2000.00 so there's that. Collectible books are making a return again.
