This is an ebay auction of a die-struck fake. I have reported it 3 days ago, to no effect. Perhaps if a few people get behind this, it will make a difference? Unfortunately, the Forgery Network, the site referencing this fake is currently down, but here is a photo comparing that reference to the ebay coin.

"Report Item" on auction page. ebay ought to know that die-struck fakes don't look exactly the same....

oh, okay ... however, in court I am going to have to call upon my expert witness ... ummm, and that's you ...
So basically, my report is gonna say
=> "I know a guy who says that this item is a fake" ... should I write that report?

Well...yeah, I did the research after all. Years ago, I would contact the bidders directly, but now it's all in ebay's hands--for better or worse.

Since I am completely without ancient coin knowledge I cannot say but the link in ebay listings is usually ineffective. For our convenience there is a link right here in CCF for reporting ebay listings and it can be found closer to the bottom of the main coin forum page. Titled:eBay Auction Violation ReportingHere's the link http://contact.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAP...lling+Coins+

I'm no expert, but perhaps a photo of a genuine coin to compare may reinforce your complaint?

But, every genuine ancient coin looks different. It's much easier to match details on a confirmed fake than prove any coin is genuine. Thanks for the comments...it's in ebay's court now.

Quote: I'm no expert, but perhaps a photo of a genuine coin to compare may reinforce your complaint? That would be ideal, but the report forms supplied by ebay do not allow any kind of html. Besides, they already informed me they have expert people investigate and determine whether coins are counterfeit or not. a rare message I got after one of my reports to ebayDear TheNickelGuy,
Thanks for reporting this listing to us.
I reviewed this listing and confirmed that it violated our Selling Currency policy. As a result, I removed the listing.
I would venture a guess that there are probably close to a million or more currency listings on ebay at any time. I cannot imagine the man power needed to be able to view every single currency listing at the time it is listed to determine if the listing is fraudulent.
Besides our own internal efforts, we often rely on our members to report violating listings.
Additionally, we work with two groups of coin experts, the Coin Community Watch group and the Coin Forgery ebay group.
When we are made aware of a potential counterfeit coin whether found internally or reported to us we send the listing to them for review. If they agree that the coin is a counterfeit, they notify us and we remove it.
Please understand that we do not "allow" sellers to defraud buyers. We remove all counterfeit coins or misleading listings when we are made aware of them.
Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.
Sincerely,
Judith ebay Customer Support

I frequently see coins on ebay that are obvious fakes yet there are numerous people bidding on them. I really don't know what to do about this since you really can't contact the bidders or the winner of the coin. It is nice to have a site like this to ask the opinion of others but unfortunately this problem is part of our hobby and something we have to deal with. I haven't let it discourage me. I once won a bid on a denarius of Vitellius and later realized it was a fake. I told the seller this before I paid for it and he apoligized only to put it up for bid again.

We used to see other bidders names in the bidder list, people were contacting the under-bidders and selling outside ebay, but now they hide them with codes like T**g. ebay claimed they were protecting bidder identities and preventing outside sales and phishing. I used to point out things to bidders about listing circumstances such as reproductions, fake coins or stolen images. This is flawed however since you can still contact a bidder during an auction by researching feedback. This way you can see what they said, who they are, and what they bid on. So you can still contact anyone by doing an advanced search by bidder. It just takes more effort on figuring out who is who and what they want to buy. You can also make a case on shill bidding this way but you have to do some thinking. I don't think ebay wants to lose bids and final value fees so they make it more difficult to tip off the bidders and they have less intervention to worry about and less to answer to.
