Found this roll hunting tonight. It is slightly nicer than the scan suggests, but not by much. I was thinking may G6?

Also, would this be considered a woodgrain?

Thanks!

Nice find. It's too bad that it isn't in better shape but it is really something to find a coin that old -- almost a century -- still circulating.

I can't tell whether or not it has a 'wood grain' -- maybe the scan just didn't pick it up. But you can compare your coin to others on this site. Just try looking up "wood grain cents" or "woodies" and you'll probably find a thread that has a good reference photo.

Again, nice find.

I was wondering about the black spotting/streaking. I wasn't sure if that's considered woodgrain, and if not, what is it?

Well, I'm no expert but I would say that the black stuff is not the wood grain that sometimes appears on coins.

From what I recall the wood grain appearance comes from improperly mixed alloys and it appears as very fine lines.

There is a thread here -- I checked -- with a 1919 cent with wood grain -- I just don't know how to link it....

The black stuff on your coin looks like ink -- it probably isn't because ink would wear off. But it looks to me like something that happened after it left the mint rather that something that happened during the minting process.

I'm thinking more like AG3, don't really think that's wood grain your seeing it looks more like road rash on the obverse, corroded with black gunk not really a 'saver' in my opinion.

markn984, If you want a fairly good one send me a PM and I'll send you a VF or so.

G4, corroded and cleaned....definately not woodgrain toning.
