Tiberius Claudius Drusus Germanicus was born on Aug 1, 10 BC. His parents were Nero Claudius Drusus, he was the younger brother of Germanicus. Claudius was born with a deformity, which left him with a speech problem and a tendency to drool. His mother despised him and was know to say that he was a monster, and that nature had not finished, but just begun. He was left on his own and became somewhat of a scholar of history and linguistics. He was the uncle of Caligula. When Caligula was murdered, Claudius though he would be next he hid in his apartments. He was taken by the soldiers and brought to there camp under guard. The next morning thinking that he would be put to death, instead he was proclaimed emperor. Claudius was considered to be a good emperor, however his wife the mother of Nero had plans for her son to become emperor. So Claudius had to be taken out. She feed him poisoned mushroom which was fatal.

They sure were, his first Messalina created scandal after scandal with her sexual activities. Which included going to brothels and taking on customers. It took awhile but Claudius finally had enough and had her put to death.

Beautiful detail on both the obverse and reverse Steve! When you buy, you buy the best don't you? Very nice!

Well, putting her to death is pretty harsh ... where I live, you'd merely break-up with the girl and then try to find a slightly better mate!!

Thanks oxos ... yah, I really like that Claudius coin ... Ummm, not "all" of my coins are top-top-shelf, but I must admit that I've already learnt a valuable lesson while I collected my Canadian quarters => I ended-up spending a whole lot of redundant cash continually upgrading my collection ...... so this time around I am trying my best to come-big or stay at home! ... but there is always a down-side ... $$$$ cha-ching!!

It's suggested that Claudius' impediment made him appear 'stupid', unambitious, and less threatening to the ruling elite. But Claudius showed them, by having more wits than a lot of his contemporaries. To anyone who hasn't seen "I Claudius"--it's a great dramatization of his life.

That's very interesting, DVC ... I may have already watched that movie, for it sounds very familiar? ... however, "back-then" I was not nearly as interested in Roman history, so I may have sloughed it off as "just another movie" ... => so I am definitely gonna re-rent the flick and lap it up all over again!! (thanks ... awesome suggestion!!) Oh, and just for the record => at work, I'm pretty sure that my direct reports refer to me as "I-stevex6" ... but sadly, I think it's because I wander around my office drooling ...

Her successor Agrippina Does have coins including some I consider very special but will never own due to their price. Second coin down on this page (I have asked for this for Christmas but no one has come through yet.): http://ansmagazine.com/Summer04/Boscoreale

Ummm hey => just a heads-up that we're gonna be heading into the "B.C." era, eh? (oh, I mean "right?") ... sorry about the Canadianism ...
=> so hopefully we won't lose a bunch of readers and/or posters?!
... c'mon, man-up!!
=> coins are coins and the Romans and the Greeks should be able to look-back and say "ahahaha, we're all the same in God's eyes" ...
... ummm, but please don't tell that to Nero, for I'd rather not become a human patio lantern"

dougsmit => I will definitely write Santa and tell him that you have been a very good boy during this thread ... By the way => Santa thinks that I rock, so hopefully he'll send you that gorgeous coin!! NOTE => but if Santa doesn't, then it was definitely echizento's fault, for I heard him tell Santa that you'd been naughty ... hey, I'm just sayin'
