So I bought two ATB 5 oz for my dad from ebay. They were slabbed by ANACS and PCGS respectivly. I don't really like the whole slabbed first strike thing but they were cheaper than getting them from APMEX (plus APMEX was out of one of them). One of them was MS69 and the other Choice BU...

So I got them today and there were some things that did not show up in the photographs. The numbers on the slabs are the same, but one has a huge rub spot on Washingtons face on the reverse. I have no clue how it could have got MS69. The other has a whole bunch of spots and gunk on the coin inside the holder. In the photo it looked like it was on the case but it is really on the coin. Like like a mouse ate a cookie in there.

First experience with slabbed "coins" is Blah.

Can you post some pictures?

Have you considered going back to the seller and asking about this? Were the coins misrepresented in the auction in any way?

Also, if the MS69 doesn't meet the MS69 requirements ANACS and PCGS should buy the coin back or replace it. Hopefully someone with experience on this topic will chime in.

Do the slabs look like they have been tampered with? Look for opaque spots around the sides of the slabs. This may indicate that they were pried open. It is not always the case, some people can do this and leave little or no trace that they switched the coins out.

I have a PF69 Deep Cameo Kennedy that has a similar "contact mark" on the jaw bone line where the inside of the slab made contact with the coin (high relief). Does your "rub spot" look something like this?

Yes, it looks similar to the Kennedy example. Except it is a lot larger.

At any rate, I contacted both sellers and I am returning one and the other is being exchanged so it looks like it is working out in the end.

Good honest dealers then! Agreed a MS69DCAM should not have a spot on it like yours oih82w8! Maybe the spot grew on it or is it more like a rub/contact mark? Could be a spot of carbon growing on the coin surface? This could have happened from a spot of moisture or saliva that transfered to the coin at PCGS right before slabbing. PCGS has it currently at $47.00 I'd get them to buy it back from you if you paid any less for it.

I do not know how to submit it for a "buy Back" from PCGS.

Is there a secret "code" word?

Oih82e8 you just have to pay to send it in and be rebumitted to pcgs. I believe they waive the fee if they agree with your assessment that the coin was graded to high or something has changed the grade.

Great that the sellers are even communicating with you.
