So my 11 year old son just started to get really excited about coin collecting the past few weeks as I started to get more active in it again. He was having a blast looking through some of my old wheat pennies and picking through change jars looking for coppers and wheats so I decided to go get a box of pennies today so that we could do some roll searching. The very first roll he opens up has a 1919 S in it. Far from a rarity but still, what are the chances. It is safe to say he is completely hooked now. Edited by Merc Man 04/06/2012 6:51 pm

Welcome and Great Find. Next thing you know he will have you doing Nickels, then Dimes, then Quarters.
I believe in a higher power, but I think it was just luck. Now a 1909 s VDB, well that would have been another story :).

All I can say is I often throw a few early wheats into circulation for just that reason. So someone will find them and get excited about coin collecting. The hobby needs young blood.

But of course it was an omin from a higher place. Makes you wonder what other powers he may posses.

I think the ability to get kids hooked is a major strength coin collecting has over other hobbies such as stamp collecting. Money is always interesting to kids. Its shiny, their parents are made of it or have a tree in the back yard (or at least they see it this way) and it it something that they cant escape becoming familiar with. Whether they can resist spending it is another thing but it sounds like something nice you can both do together.

Kids can be driven by the 'I've have got something you haven't got' syndrome. I think that this syndrome drives a lot of CCF members as well. Works better if you find it or buy it for yourself, rather than if it's given to you.
