I wanted to bid on this '14-D but decided it might be best to read up on them first and determine whether or not it is real. Since I'm not buying it slabbed I don't want to take any chances since fakes are so common. It passed all of the tests except for one. On all (or most) 1914-Ds there is supposed to be a die crack running from the bottom of Lincoln's shirt extending to the rim. I see no evidence of this die crack on the coin in question. Any help from the Lincoln experts here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, peter

Hard to tell with the given pictures, however, it does look to have been cleaned....too bad. The overall look is a bit sharp, especially the reverse. Definately cause for suspecion because it looks more like a P issue.

Also, you DEFINATELY don't want to buy a raw 14D if you can't be 100% on the authentication. Don't make a big mistake, just buy a slabbed one!

Thanks for weighing in on this one BadThad. Like you said, I can't be 100% certain so I'll leave well enough alone. I'd be physically ill if I dropped a bundle then found out it was a fake.

Hi, Peter, Good advice. Also, the 'D' just doesn't look right to me.

Just a quick update: The coin went for $700. Someone either got a really good bargain or someone will be really heart broken. Hopefully it isn't the latter.

More likely the latter!

I think from the photos the coin looks pretty good, the date is the correct width, it doesn't look like and sign of removing VDB from the shoulder (1918 and later), and the MM looks of proper style, however, this is one of those coins you should never purchase from photos alone, even dealers will get several opinions before buying a higher end raw coin at a show. With the quality of Chinese fake die struck coins these days, you should not take a chance on an internet purchase unless from a VERY reputable dealer that is willing to take a return, or submit to a TPG first. Buy a slabbed coin, too much risk buying a raw one
