I recently could not resist buying a lot of 400 silver War Nickels because I got them at almost half melt. I've only bought 90% and .999 oz coins. Does anyone else but the 35% nickels to hold onto or am I better off reselling them and investing in a higher grade.

Only if they have a high grade from NGC PCGS with nice rainbow toned color in my case, an I have not pulled the trigger on any as of yet, but probably eventually will, they tone real nice in some cases....

Most dealers will sell War Nickels at below spot because they are not melted for silver by smelters and do not contain much silver. However I recently sold, on Craigslist, four rolls of War Nickels for full melt though...so folks do buy the stuff at spot.

I think you are better off sticking with 90 percent junk silver but thats my opinion. I currently only have high grade slabbed War Nickels.

I don't think you can ever go wrong at 50% of melt, no matter what coins your buying. There is always a buyer, and on ebay people will usually pay slightly over spot.
Rest in Peace

I can often get them for like a buck from my guy, plus I find quite a few at work. I wouldn't sell them till silver gets high again, right now they aren't worth much. 1/2 spot dang sure isn't bad

Thanks for the advice guys. I was able to go through and finish off an album with a couple of really fine condition ones and pulled a couple of others that are either rainbow toned or look as if they could be proofs to hopefully sell or trade to someone.

Funny, but I agree, silver at 1/2 is always good. I acutally like War Nickels. Someone once pointed out that they have the highest concentration of silver to face value...how could that be a bad thing? ;)

Local dealers buy them for $1/each right now roughly so if you can buy them for the same price that dealers pay then you have done well. I'm not a big fan but if I find them in bargain bins or antique stores for around $1 to $1.20 I usually pick them up.
Rest in Peace

Only the 42p "could" be proof.

I find a few a week through my C-Stores. I kind of like them to but I probably wouldn't if I had to sell some:)
