I don't have my book but I suspect it is Japanese.

This is Japan in Japanese: æ- ¥æœ¬å›½ ; and I am pretty sure it is the three Kanji on the top of the second image.

Yep, it's Japanese, a 1 yen. The date is "Year 32 of the Showa Emperor", which translates to AD 1957.
