From the article:

Quote:
The Mint has challenged software developers to design applications that use the prototype MintChip technology -- which in its current experimental form is embedded in a microSD card -- with mobile devices or computers. There are a number of prizes, with the top award for best overall application being 10 ounces of gold, worth nearly $17,000 at today's prices

I like how the prize for coming up with this new digital currency is some of the world's oldest currency, gold.

I think it would, more people would tend to grab them up and save them making the supply dry up and drive up demand.
It may cost you some credits from your bank account to buy some.
Oh wait, it already does, it's called Paypal.
This is only the start of things to come I believe.
I am a doomsday thinker, a pessimist when it comes to the state of things in this world. Many would disagree and rightly so as it is only my point of view and I sure could be wrong but ....
I do think all currency transactions are heading for extinction.

One day, I am afraid that this digital world is more likely to collapse than the barter system would.
All it takes is a good hacker and either widespread account theft or a major virus and imagine the chaos.
Some feel terrorists could do far more harm messing up the infrastructure of the internet than any of the physical attacks they use.
Files and accounts are a lot more vulnerable than something tangible.

Quote:
Crown corporation launched a research and development project called MintChip, with a goal of creating a new digital method of exchanging money in small denominations, anything $10 or less.

That doesn't leave much else because most larger transactions do not exchange in cash either. If you go buy a lawnmower, a car, or a house do you use cash to buy it?

Bye bye money. Hello and swipe your plastic, direct deposit and direct payment, eventually those hand held computers you call cell phones that you take pictures with, talk on and go on the web with will be your wallet. I would bet on it.

I think its disgusting what this world is coming to. I am 27, and am a firm believer that Cash is King.
This is just a way for the government to keep tabs even more.

I do not think most modern currency is worth collecting, unless you can keep them for a 1000 years. Here the 1 and 2 cent cost face value except uncirculated pieces, but metal value is more. ood to see a useless denomination go.
Rest in Peace

They already have at least two systems with plug ins for smart phones that allow you to accept plastic.

so with the "mintchip" the govt will be able to "horde" the electronic dollars and use them to invest. not to mention charge fees for the priveledge of convenience, much like the banks do today.

what happens when their investments go sour? (or when the power goes out, lol ?!?!?)

cash will always be king. and when the *** Edited by Staff | The bad word filter is in place for a reason. Bypassing the filter and making the intended word obvious anyway is completely unacceptable. *** hits the fan silver and gold will still be trusted over paper
