Hi, I have been a casual noodler on and off for many years but am starting to get more serious about it now. I have gone through my 1972 fifty cent coins and noticed a couple with Cuds and wouldn't mind knowing what sort of price they would get. One has a minor Cud filling the gap between the feet of the lion on the shield. Another has a Cud on the bottom edge of the shield, above the '5' in '50'. Any ideas, as I haven't found anything about this to date. Thanks.

Any chance of you posting a picture with a close up of the Cud area? I don't think I've ever seen this error, but I'd estimate $2-$5 depending on the overall condition of the coin, so regular images of both sides would also be good to see. Value maybe a bit higher if the coin is in great nick. Forgot my manners! to CCF!

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I've tried taking a few photos of the coins today, but they aren't very good. Is there somewhere on this website that offers tips on taking useful quality photos of coins? Thanks.

What are you using? Mobile or DCAM? Most digital cameras have a macro mode which would be ideal for taking close up shots of coins. If a mobile, you're generally at the mercy of the lens/autofocus combination...

I've finally have taken piccies that show the Cuds, but as it is night here now they still aren't the best, but will do for a start. This is the Cud that smoothly fills in part of the area between the lion's front paws in the shield and extends to the inner border of the shield. This Cud is on the bottom of the shield, just above the 5 in '50'.

Oops, on the lion's foot image, I meant the filled area is between the front foreground paw the rear background paw.

Nice pick-up awildeheart and to CCF! I'll have to see if I've got any of these, definitely never seen them before, so well done! Do you use a loupe? If yes, what magnification? I've done some cropping of your image, I can clearly see the Cud above the 5, and I can see a Cud (I think) under the Lions front left paw, between the paw and the edge of the shield. 2 versions of the cropped images below, the 2nd one with the areas inside a red border, to see if I have them correct.

Hi, I've taken a better piccie of the filled in area between the lion's feet. It isn't a rough type of Cud, but more like the strike wasn't complete or something has happened to prevent the space being the same depth as all the other spaces. The circled area is filled smoothly rather than having a distinct edge between high and low spots as per most of the coin. It is very subtle. Probably nothing? I took the photo using the macro on my Fujifilm camera at maximum resolution and then zoomed into the relevant area in Photoshop.
