Not real, and plainly so. The P and L are too close to the buff's back. The rear leg is too strong. The known roughness below the stomach is not present. They even removed too much of the front leg; a real coin has the hairy part of the upper leg still showing about to the level of the other front leg.

Silly.

For the record, I'm going to contact the buyer and give him a chance to do the right thing before I have it removed.

Fake as a $3 bill. Buffalo Bill that is. ;-)

Looks like a "buffed" 3-legged buffalo, too (as in buffed the leg off with a dremmel), though I'd need better pics and to view it on something other than my tiny iPhone screen to be sure.

Not to mention that is is circulated, not a "Gem BU".

I contacted him, and he politely replied that he's sure it's real. So, I reluctantly reported it; he doesn't strike me as a crook.

I reported as well and wrote the seller.
This is an altered coin, the front leg has been ground then polished off to deceive. An
authentic 3 legged Buffalo nickel has certain characteristics that are
unique to the coin. One being that E PLURIBUS UNUM is supposed to be a
noticeable distance from the bison's back, easily seen without the use of a
magnifying glass. This is a normal 1937 D nickel where the E PLURIBUS UNUM
is almost touching the bison's back.

Late edit:
Yep, some people just have such closed minds and believe what they want to believe.

All I can say is, I hope ebay removes the listing before someone who doesn't know well enough makes a 4-figure mistake.

Didn't they grind too much of the leg off as well? I'm trying to learn the differences so please chime in.
