I'm slightly bothered by the scratch behind the eye, but barring that it's a nice VF coin, grade being obverse-limited.

VF-30. It is a nice looking coin, but some of the eye appeal is lost by those nasty scratches. Why couldn't they have done that to the reverse instead?

I agree. Unfortunately I couldn't see it from the photos prior to purchase, and you can't even see it in hand without really concentrating on that spot and constantly tilting it back and forth. Of course, macro shots don't lie, but I did have to go back and look at the coin again after I downloaded the images to make sure it wasn't on the 2X2. lolol I paid a little high F price for this one, so if it even makes VF, I'm happy. Plus, It's just a nice old coin without a lot of fanfair and worries.

tights24 - I agree a VF. But I don't agree that the scratch would be better on the eagle. That is my favorite side. I may have said it before but my grandfather gave me an 1830 Half Dollar in just a bit better shape that he pulled from circulation when he first went to work in the office of the Dartmouth Mill sometime between 1904 and 1910. He gave it to me in 1957 and I was very proud of that coin. I still retain it and would not sell it for any sum. The John Reich design is one of my personal favorites. It is a beautiful coin.

Right you are Swamper - I stand corrected. It would be even better if the scratch would just go away altogether. Regardless this is a nice looking coin. I know what you mean about the coin your Grandfather gave you. My favorite coin in my collection is an old worn Shield nickel that my Grandmother picked up off the ground in 1897 in rural Arkansas when she was six years old. She gave it to me before she passed away in 1992 at the age of 101. Priceless. Colin

Definitely a nice VF20 coin. I'm glad the scratches are not that noticeable with the coin in-hand. Sometimes digital cameras can be so cruel...

VF 20 seems fair as a net grade. She's a late die state and otherwise is borderline XF.

I give it a VF-30. Is that a fingerprint on the obverse between the back of the bust & the stars? Amazing how digital photography will pull up things you don't see with the coin in hand. Nice coin.
