I think these SMS coins are from prestige sets.

No they are from uncirculated mint sets from 2005-2010 when the coins had the satin finish.

Did the Mint made both kinds then, SMS and regular UNCs during 2005-2010?

Quote: Did the Mint made both kinds then, SMS and regular UNCs during 2005-2010? Yes. There were these satin finish coins, and regular business strikes for the bags and rolls they sell.

The satin finish mint set coins from 2005 to 2010 are made with a significantly different process. It differs enough from the business strike to be considered its own type, just as proof coins are. It is something that the third party graders are recognizing.

When these came out, in the mint sets, the TPG's did not have a standard for how they were going to label them. I think they are putting "satin finish" on the slab now.

It was in an older NGC slab (popped the coin out for the slab insert for holding and photographing raw coins), so the "name change" may not have taken place yet.

I was wondering why a few of my coins in my Kennedy half set looked so different. Just a couple of mine from 2005 to 2008 are like this. They look awesome, but I was just wondering why they looked different. Maybe I will now switch them out for regular business strike ones. Not sure if the difference bugs me or not yet.

Are those sating finish/SMS ones worth more than the regular strikes?

Actually most of the Satin finish coins are high end grades. The regular business strikes in those high grades are MUCH rarer.

I'll revive this thread for one more question. Since the satin finish type are not meant as business strike then what is considered a good grade? A grade worth saving?
