I think our US Nickels will be using lower-cost metals in the production of 5c coins soon and be like the multi-ply plated steel coins in Canada. Also, once US has enough new lower-cost nickels out, they will start an alloy recovery program to melt old nickels.
So I would save any new BU nickel rolls you find! Maybe 2012 will be the last year for real Nickel 5 cent coin?
