has anyone ever boughten "unsearched bank rolls" on ebay before? there seems to be little risk if you can buy a roll of halves for under $15 but it makes me wunder. everything in life is a scam to separate you from you money. Is it possible to check for silver without out opening the rolls? either by weighing the roll or scanning it with a metal detector? im dont plan do this to resell them to someone else lol im just asking because I want to make sure there is no way the person selling them to me knows that they are def junk and cherry pick the good stuff while selling the trash.

Hello, Assuming that you do not yet want to open the paper roll I would then venture to say that initially just weighing the the roll would be a 'possible' and economical method to at least initially proceed. But it is important to keep in mind that only weighing the roll may produce incomplete and misleading data because a non transparent roll: 1) may possess an incorrect number of half coins and/or 2) some of these hidden coins could could be bent which could give the erroneous impression that the roll is more complete than it actually is and/or 3) other similar-sized and weighted filler materials could have been intentionally placed within the interior sections of the roll to give the impression that the weight of the roll is within specifications. On the other hand if one actually desires to to perform a test on an extremely valuable numismatic type of half and be virtually 99.9% guaranteed that at least the coin is 90% silver a couple of other more expensive options would be best to consider: a) send the coin to a TPG for authentication for a fee or b) hit up one of your past or present college buddies that has access to a mass spectrometer which is virtually 99.9% guaranteed to produce an accurate analysis of the coin's composition. Good luck, mdpmedia

These auctions are for those that don't realize that you can buy a roll at the bank for $10.

Theres no such thing as "unsearched" If they are selling it on ebay it has been searched. I do buy coins on ebay, but they are single coins so I know what I'm getting. But all rolls you have to know they have been searched.

Re-wrap rolls I would consider pre-searched, although the machine-wrapped roll is difficult to search, and get the machine crimp back.

I would agree. If it is a roll of a mixed pennies/dimes/nickles/quarters/halves/dollars then just go to the bank. No sense in wasting your money paying $1 for a 50 cent roll of pennies (plus shipping) on that roll. And if it is being advertised as a more specific roll, say Wheat cent Pennies, you have to wonder "How does the seller know they are all wheat cents unless they sorted them from other pennies?" If you are collecting those specific coins, buy from sellers who don't advertise them as being unsorted, and buy single coins. If you are hunting for specific coins, save some money and invest some time in Coin Roll Hunting.

Keep in mind that "searched" and "sorted" are two different terms.

Ok so whether or not the ebay sellers can chrat it just makes more sense to goto the bank. I was you nder the impression that halves are rarely circulated. Is this a common item I can expect the bank to have or do I need to search several banks?

Quote: I was you nder the impression that halves are rarely circulated. Well, yes and no. I joined a roll hunting forum back in 2007. There were a lot of crh'ers online. For every one, probably hundreds that don't use forums.. thousands upon thousands of coins being "circulated" through dumping and spending. I myself use them to buy items, so do many others, some even paying their mortgages with halves. All due to the rise in silver value, (or devaluation of the FRN)

Everyone always talks about how buying this of the bay is only for those that don't know they can get them at the bank. My guess is most people know they could, they either would just prefer to pay $15 and get it sent to their door (ie...lazy), or more likely, they aren't what you would call a "people person", and the idea of going and asking for something that they aren't sure will be there is scary for them. You have to remember that we are a 'special' group. Most normal people don't have a clue why people would enjoy going through rolls of common coin. There's probably quite a few in our hobby that could go the rest of their lives without ever meeting someone new and be very happy about it!
