biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 02/06/2007 2:40 pm I am not sure what this cent is being stored in, but it has been removed from the original proof set packaging- 1956 sets were cello soft packs, not a solid white plastic thing. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 02/06/2007 4:01 pm Wait a minute. 1956 Lincolns were a full-alloy coin, not clad, right? What "layer" is there to peel? It's obviously peeled in the closeup pic - is that a layer of the coin (un-possible, or so I thought) or the layer of whatever got onto the coin peeling? It sure looks like there's been a layer of something added to the coin post-mint, and it's now peeling off, leaving the original surface of the coin trashed underneath it. Can I assume the irregular rim is due to whatever it's encased in? Report this Post to the Staff
coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 02/07/2007 12:13 am If this was a clad or plated coin (which it is not), and if the layer were missing (as with the modern zinc coins) it would be an "error" and not a "die variety". Again, die varieties ONLY deal with doubling of the design on the coin, whether it be a doubled die, date doubling (older coins) or mintmark doubling. This particular coin is suffering heavily from corrosion. Report this Post to the Staff

Berry Valued Member United States 394 Posts	Posted 02/07/2007 6:43 pm Thank everyone for their input. I had no inkling what was on or wrong with the coin. Since it is part of a 1956 Proof Set, I was hoping for at least something to allow me to sell it. Since the coin is a cull I will break up the set and put the cent to rest..
