I was just looking over recent sale prices on ebay to see what these sets are selling for lately. This is not a complete survey by any means, but I do think it is interesting nonetheless. First of all (and no surprise here), graded sets that are MS70 are still bringing a significant premium over anything else, and PCGS seems to bring a higher premium than NGC: $1,259.00 (NGC) $1,199.99 (NGC) $1,427.99 (PCGS) $1,569.00 (PCGS) Second of all (and only slightly surprising), graded sets that are MS69 are still selling for a premium, but much less (for some reason, I could only find recent examples by PCGS): $700.00 (PCGS) $690.75 (PCGS) Third (and most surprising), raw, opened sets in OGP seem to be selling at or slightly above the price of the PCGS MS69 sets: $670.57$710.57$698.87$725.00Again, the sample size is too small to draw any conclusions, but I would say in general that anybody who managed to score a graded MS70 set will definitely find it to have been worth their while to pay for the grading costs. For anybody else, you'd have been better off not having it graded at all since there doesn't seem to be a premium over raw opened sets in OGP. Of course, there was no way to know ahead of time if your set would be graded at MS69 or MS70. Hopefully, everybody who bought five sets and sent them in for grading will end up with at least one MS70 set and can sell it to recoup the costs for the other sets. And for those of us who didn't bother grading our sets at all, well, I think we'll make put pretty good in the long run. [Edited for typos]

We sold my raw set at 690. VACookey still has hers. We bought them not for profit, but because we wanted them. I only sold my set because there WAS such a profit to be made and I wanted that money to invest in other coins, which we did. Had she not had her set, and there was only one in the house, we would not have sold mine.

Well, I'm certainly not planning to sell any of my 5 sets any time soon, that's for sure! I hope to pass them onto my son some day, but it's nice to think they will have decent resell value if the need ever arose. My biggest fear was simply that the value of the raw sets would eventually settle at or near the purchase price, and I'm glad to see that doesn't seem to be the case right now.
I'm also glad to see that I may have been right to not have my sets graded afterall...

I got two of those sets....sent both off to PCGS.....all but two of the coins came back as PF/MS-69's. (And NO, the two 70's that I DID get, were NOT the ones you would want to be the 70's !) ... ... Too bad so sad for me......lesson learned. Sold one set for a hair over $600.00. (No Ebay/paypal fees or anything, sold to a private person & he paid shipping.) Though I didn't figure exact total expenses on everything (including joining PCGS, packing/mailing tape, a box to put "my" box in, postage, insurance, gas running all over town trying to get the box mailed out properly and from a location that would ship them, plus all the fees, US Mint shipping/handling costs, PCGS grading fees, PCGS special designation fees, US postal fees, etc. etc. etc. etc. etc. etc) I believe I came out of the whole thing sorely lacking and bleeding from the eyes !A bad taste was permanently left in my mouth from the experience and the "profit expectations" that never materialized............. .... ....... On my remaining set.......I wonder how long the prices will stay at that level. If this would be a permanent long standing price.....or if it will eventually start tapering off some ? I sometimes wonder if I should just sell my last one too.....use the money and buy a low-grade 1922 "No D" LWC or some quality Shield nickels or just something like that ! ..... Thinkin' this might make me happier ! ...... short term AND long term ! .......

A bit off topic...
I presume these were sold by the Mint? If so, what was the original cost in 2011?

That is an interesting analysis. It'll be interesting to see if they hold their prices in the near future or will they go down.

I'm expecting eventually it will be down. Quote: A bad taste was permanently left in my mouth from the experience and the "profit expectations" that never materialized. And just think, you can do the same thing again this year with the two coin San Francisco set.

I sold one of my 3 opened sets for $725 a month or so after I received them. I still have the other two and will be keeping them - the set I sold paid for almost both of the keepers, after ebay and PayPal fees. It was a fiasco to get them and I know the whole disaster angered a lot of people, but I was fortunate (and patient). I'm happy with the sets and the low mintage #s.

I'm still very happy with the $2,250.00 that I got for selling 3 raw sets to a dealer. No ebay or paypal fees for me!! It made the 2 sets I kept free and then some.....I can't complain at all. Love these sets!!

Quote: I even put bubble wrap around the boxes to protect the cardboard Good lord, man. When are you going to sell and get your money back out of them? If you're not going to sell, why not take them out of the boxes and enjoy them? * edited for my misuse of quote tags...

Though I missed out on the initial release I eventually got around to getting one. I don't intend on selling mine and would be keeping it for my personal collection.

Love these sets!! That was my initial plan...and it makes a lot of sense on many fronts. Unfortunately I find it much easier to buy than to sell so I still have all my sets (all graded)
