My son who works at a convenient store often brings me some very cool coins. He will also talk to regular customers about their coins, and if they are willing to sell I'll be very fair about it. Today someone came in and paid for something with a 2002 ASE. My boy pulled it for me and brought it home saying "This is by far the coolest coin I have ever seen dad". Then I showed him a few more. Jaw Dropped!
While it's cool that my collection grows this way it also really stinks that folks have to throw down a $30 bullion and use it as a dollar.. I schooled my boy some about this coin in the event that it happens again. He can maybe help a few of these folks out and my collection can still grow. If I can get an ASE for spot and help somebody out I'll do it anytime.

Sounds like something my daughter has done; gotten into my coins for "spending money". I had to school them on leaving "my" coins alone.

BTW, nice snag from circulation, hard to believe that someone would do that though.

Some people will read "One Dollar" on the face of it and say, "Ah, ok, so it says it's worth a buck but man this is heavy! Ah well, pack of gum, please?"

(Most expensive gum, ever. :-) )

Another sad possibility is that the ASE was stolen and then spent.
Someone could have had a small collection......word got out to the wrong people.....a break-in happens.....coins are ignorantly gotten rid of by the thief......
This is an all-to-frequent occurrence too, I'm afraid.

There could be a batch of them out there being spent for face value around town ! ....

I got one from a teller for face value once when I asked for any large size dollars they had. They said "i have a bunch of eisenhowers and this weird one from 1986 you want it?" Apparently the vast majority of the population doesn't even know what a silver eagle is. Regardless its sitting in a 7070 that I have specifically for circulation finds.

Yeah that wasn't in circulation long at all. I think eaglefoot might be right.

Unfortunately, at this point there's no means to trace it back to its previous owner, so you might as well keep it and give it a good home.

That same thing happened to a friend of mine at a convenience store she worked at. She kept it and showed it to me. I paid her spot for it (something like $40 at the time). Made her day! It was a 2000.

I own several C-Stores and my brother pulled two of these from the registers last month. They came from the same person but at different times, his are pretty worn but an oz is an oz.

Great find

Nice find. I hope it was an honest mistake (not knowing what it was) and not a case of theft.
