I keep hearing how the public is stupid and stubborn because it won't accept US dollar coins but it got me thinking. What is the real reason why the people won't accept the coins?
Well how do most coins get into public hands. Through retailers right? What are the retailers doing? Well they're not getting coins from the bank and the coins they get from the public they're simply wrapping up and sending back. So if the gov is so convinced that these coins are good instead of berating the public and expecting them to go to the bank specifically to pick dollar coins up maybe they should encourage retailers to hand them out.
What do you think is the reason the dollar coins are failing?

Slot machines only take paper bills, not Dollar Coins. I like paper bills because they stay in my wallet...always losing coins when I sit and they fall out of pocket.

The biggest reason is just that the dollar is still there. As long as they make the dollar the coin will not take off. If they got rid of the dollar the coin would work.

Cash registers do not have a section for dollar coins. The drawers are replaceable but it would be an expense that has no return.
I think a lot of stores would prefer to be completely cashless. Or they are anticipating that they soon will be and don't feel the need to upgrade/replace the cash drawers.

The banks have to issue them and they first have to order them.
They do neither.

We are creatures of habit. We have always used dollar bills, and from an individuals point of view, we have no reason to change. Look at the reasons given that people won't use dollars coins... Morgan, Peace, Eisenhower dollars - too large and bulky Susan B. Anthony - smaller size, but complaint was they were too similar to quarters Native Am & Pres. Dollars - left the size the same but changed to gold color and removed the reeded edge that the SBA dollars had. The mint has addressed the reasons people give for not using dollar coins, and people still will not use them. Most people won't change just to change.

Speaking as someone who works in retail . . . I agree with everyone here, and would like to add "lack of education" to the list. I make an effort to hand out dollar coins whenever they pop up in my register, and the most common response I get is a confused "oh, what's this?" This goes for all kinds of dollar coins: in the 13 months I've worked this job I've gotten Ikes, Sacs, Prez dollars, SABs, and one cashier at another store even took in a Morgan dollar (we promptly rescued the poor thing out of her drawer). Many people simply do not know that dollar coins exist. My standard explanation is this: "That is a one-dollar [Presidential, Eisenhower] coin [that honors Susan B. Anthony/Sacagawea]. They're really convenient, I love them!" The response I usually get to this is either "ooh, cool/neat/interesting!" or "Oh, my daughter/son/grandchild will LOVE this!" I think people would be more amenable to the change if they knew more about it.

People are naturally resistant to change. Whilst the dollar bill is still around, Americans probably wont accept the coin. The only way you will get people onto the coin is by completely removing the dollar bill altogether.

Quote: Cash registers do not have a section for dollar coins. Four coin slots: nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars Four bill slots: twos, fives, tens, twenties. and the problem is? It's a bottom up problem with a top down solution. Merchants don't use them because banks make it a hassle. Banks don't get them because they're stuck in their ways. Solution: When banks order ones, send them coins. With only coins, banks give them to merchants. Fact: Mal-Wart went through 100 million brass bucks in about a week. You'd think that would demonstrate how the public didn't like them.

Some vending machines return dollar coins, not all. My company just got new machines that accept dollar coins, $1, $5 bills, and credit cards. They return change from a 5 in paper dollars. In fact the machine even says that it returns paper dollars. I remember that Wal-mart stocked dollar coins when the Sacagawea coins where first issued. The lasted a couple of months before they stopped carrying them. The mint tried to get them directly to retailers with the direct ship program. The mint would sell you dollar coins for face value with free shipping. That program was killed by individuals ordering thousands of dollars of coins with credit cars to get points then returning them to their local bank in the original packaging unopened.

I think dollar coins made more sense back when everybody, including men, carried around coin purses. Once men abandoned coin purses and started using wallets exclusively, it's just much more convenient to carry around bills instead of coins, at least for larger denominations.

Yeah, it was nice to get some extra cash back, without having to spend anything. But I don't see why that was a problem, since the Mint was getting their dollar coins distributed and the banks were getting them without any delivery charge and they were already wrapped! If the banks don't want to use them, then no one will ever use them. And that is one of the biggest problems. Once the banks force people to use them, everyone will use them.

Once men abandoned coin purses and started using wallets exclusively, it's just much more convenient to carry around bills instead of coins, at least for larger denominations. Best reason so far. In the past I've had coins wear holes in pants pockets and fall out all over the place. So now hate to carry excessive coins. On commuter trains by me the conductors use those coin changers on their belts. No place for those baby dollars. So they ask people not to try using them. At a restaurant I left some as a tip. The waitress yelled at me as I left saying "Sir, you left some of your kids play money on the table". One reason I don't use them now. If you do use a lot of single currency, the same amount of baby sized dollars is just way to much to carry. Still many vending machines will not take them and many of the smaller vending machine company owners don't want to spend money converting. To easy to mistake them for Quarters. Yes they are different colored but in the dark, a barr or tavern, not the best thing to use or get in change. And sort of late to start something new. As more and more people go to plastic credit and debit cards, all forms of cash will soon enough be a thing of the past.

The only way the US will get the Dollar coin into circulation and stay there is to pull the Dollar bill out of circulation altogether.
As for a cash register, Canada has done it for $1 and $2 coins, so that's just an excuse.
