I figured it was the same as chucksters. Now this is not directed towards you NickleGuy, in any way... I am just a bit dismayed at why collectors do not considered this a legitimate error. The die is worn so much it has caused damage at the mint, giving the coin a doubled look, wouldn't that be similar to a die crack, damaged die causing cracks and such, which are worth something, not much but something.

Die deterioration/wear is not considered to be an error at all unless it involves terminal failure of the die. Die chips, cracks, and deterioration doubling are an acceptable part of the minting process and are not screened out by the Mint. Most of the coins minted by a die pair during their life will be of the late die state variety and will show some degree of these issues. Once the die deteriorates to the point of involving majors breaks such as a Cud, that is when you have an error as that is considered to be a terminal state close to die failure. A die will be taken out of service if a Cud or major break is noticed because the next step would be a shattered die(a valuable and rare error).

Thanks for the clarification biokemist6, I understand better now but it does not make me feel any better. If I don't find a good error soon, I will have a worthless collection of wannabe errors.

Well, errors tend to be valuable because they are not easy to find in the wild I have been collecting for over 25 years and I have never found an error coin in change although I have found a currency error. However, my father has found a broadstruck SBA Dollar and a Kennedy half dollar with a 5% clip, both came from the old canvas mint bags when he was picking up the respective denominations at a bank for spending.

From my recollection, I only ever found 1 large Cud 1983 P nickel in pocket change, but I have cherry picked a few varieties at various coin shops or coin shows over the years at normal coin prices.
