Here's a coin that's been sitting in my assorted world coin jar. I must have seen it before but I don't remember where it came from. Anyone have some insight on history, grade, possible value? Lots of countries were making weird wartime coins in 1942 but Peru was was pretty far from the action in World War II. Did they issue special wartime coinage?

Thanks for your input!

I know there's about 4 or 5 varieties of the 1/2 Sol 1942 (which I'm not too familiar with), including one that was minted in San Francisco. Yours isn't, there is no S mint mark on the obverse, so probably minted in Lima, Peru. Regardless, the values for all of these are pretty similar, maybe around $4 in VF condition like yours. The series continued until 1965, so it wasn't WW2 coinage.

I like these as a curiosity since the inscription makes them essentially metal banknotes. It translates to, "The Central Reserve Bank of Peru will pay to the bearer 1/2 gold sol."

"Sol" is Spanish for "sun" but in this context it actually originates with the Latin "solidus."
