Poll Question
The Lincoln Cent is soon to reach it's 100 anniversary. Some say that cents are no longer useful and should no longer be minted, while others say it is still useful and should continue. As one that feels it is a useful coin, I would like to see the cent redesigned with a new obverse and reverse. What do you think?

We got rid of them in Australia a long time ago. And guess what....life went on. There wasn't wholesale profiteering, the sky didn't fall, and dogs didn't lay down in peace with cats. Get rid of them.

In Finland we don't use 1 and 2 eurocent coins and I think it is a good decision.Five cent coin is smallest and still useful.Striking too small denominations is some kind of waste of metals because they will lay around jars?

Don't get rid of them -- the more coins the better, I say. But I am for a new Lincoln design for 2009, to give Abe his due, and then a new design altogether for 2010 and beyond. Something "emblematic of liberty" again would be my choice. I would like to see all circulating coins redesigned, sans dead presidents.

However, I am not holding my breath.

I voted to keep it. I wouldn't mind seeing a different design but only one of Lincoln. He's the only dead president I can stand.

I don't know guys, maybe markn will have some good input, but wouldn't getting rid of the cent cause inflation, i.e. prices rounded up. More importantly, isn't this a vote for a tax increase? Lets see, a state sales tax of 6% will have to calculated in 10ths, duhhhh, so a $1 purchase with a 6% sales tax is $1.06 but oh my gosh, we have no cents! No problem, we will just round it up to $1.10. Markn, were you around when they made the change and what affect did it have? Jim

Who gets the leftovers? The business where you spend it? The city where you spend it? The state? The feds? Put it into a fund for education or health care? Most of the people who are in charge of this kind of thing are fairly closed minded and I don't believe anything will ever come of it. There will probably still be Lincoln cents minted 100 years from now with the same old boring design just like the rest of our coins. The days of changing designs every 25 years or so seem to have gone by the way side.

One more note: Just because you change the design of the back of a coin or even both sides for a couple years doesn't constitute change in my mind.

As a collector and a consumer I'm rather torn as to my opinion. A re-design would be nice. Even keeping Mr. Lincoln for traditions sake perhaps. The elimination of the Cent would increase the value (somewhat) of those in our collections and would be less intrusive in the purchase process...ahhhh no more .99 pricing.

Jim1953 you hit the nail right on the head. We lose the cent and we end up shelling out more money to the tax man. Also once the cent is gone, how long would it be before the nickel and dime goes too?

This subject has been bouncing around the Numismatic community for a while now and regardless of what is said, discussed, printed or polls like this the government will do as they want.

Ron

I watched C-Span's Washington Journal today and they had a co-chair of the Lincoln bi-centennial committee on the program and he stated that there will be a new Lincoln one cent piece in 2009, same obverse and four different reverses on the new variety.

It is very interesting regardless of how you feel about the penny, last year it accounted for nearly half of all the coins minted in the U S. Out of 15 billion coins minted 7.5 billion were pennies. Where are they all going if not in circulation? Is this where the "hoards" are coming from?

Just wondering

Andrew289 has it right. Get rid of the cent, nickel, and paper dollar. The cent and nickel have no purchasing power to speak of. Both are expensive to make. Untold billions of cents have been minted in the last few years and just seem to vanish in circulation. And they are so worthless it doesn't matter if they're lost. The paper dollar is expensive to make only to be worn out and replaced in approx.16 months. I mentioned on a previous post that I think it would be nice if we had a $1 coin about the size of a dime, and that would be the smallest coin we had. The $1 coin would be popular once again I think. For comparison purposes imagine grabbing a handful of mixed change. You'll probably end up with $3-4. Now imagine grabbing a handful of change in 1850. You would end up with at least $100 purchasing power. Of course this is just my opinion and might be the stupidest scheme anyone ever dreamed up.

they(the govmint) have been talking about phasing out the cent for over 35 years that I remember. it will not happen in my time anyway so I'm not going to loose any sleep over it. but I am in agreement that the 09 cent should have a new design for only the one year then go back to the same old same old
i like it just the way it is.

The 2009 redesign of the cent is a done deal. It was part of the 2005 law that authorized the president dollar coins. There will be 4 different reverse designs for the 2009 cent and a design review after that.
