bigger close up?

the right side looks like a straighter line (on the inside of the curves) than the double curve of the left side, almost looks like an 8 over a 6

I think something rolled over the 8 to flatten it.

This was done by a coin counting machine. If you look at your pocket change you will frequently see coins with concentric scratches near the rim. The coins get scratched in this way in coin counters, and that appears is what happened to your dime, except the part of the machine that causes the scratch was not bearing down on the coin hard enough to damage the surface, only the raised areas of the coin above the surface.

of coarse, thats one explanation,but you gotta admit it, only picked on the eight, and did a expert job!lol

Look closer at the first pix. The crimper caught the right side of the 8 and pushed it to the left, with part of it untouched.

but ya, I now see the railroad tracks from the coin roller (to the left of the green lines)

It is the silver,softer metal.Here it is with diff lighting,I see no evidence of a coin counter on any of the other surfaces,how could it just damage the 8, and nothing else? oh I see,,, Thanks for the info feed, Biokemist3 !

The crimper arm is just far enuf inside the rim to catch the 8, and possibly the S in cents. It didn't come close enuf to the field to scratch the 8 off entirely, just sheer the right edge of it.
