I went to my dump bank after searching through 560.45 dollars worth of Dimes, Quarters and 13 dollars in halves. She comes back and hands me 541.05. I told her there was something wrong cause I knew exactly how much I put in. She said that when they send the coins off they would tell them if there was a discrepancy and there has never been one before. My question is how do I get my 20 bucks back. I fell like someone just stole from me and said it wasn't their fault.

More details? Was the coin rolled and then counted? Or was it in a bag that they then dumped in a coin maching? how did they count it?

They took the bag in the back and used the counting machine.

unfortunately I do not believe there is anything you can do. I work at a community bank and we have a coin counter also. We get it regularly maintenanced and it still will occasionally be off. Nothing near $20, maybe a few cents though. Sorry

Quote: They took the bag in the back and used the counting machine. Did they check the reject bin? I also wonder if the half dollars ever made it into the machine.

I'm not sure if they checked the reject bin. I was so upset that I didnt ask. I've seen them be off by a dollar at the most. I was afraid that would be the case wildspinx.

Now depending on the size of the bank and if you have an account there. Smaller banks are more likely to work with you. For instance, if you came in our bank and make a scene, not absurd or anything, but just let them know they shorted you $20 and you would like to know how they plan on resolving it, and they say there is nothing they can do, then ask if you may speak to a branch manager or even higher if you go to their main office. Persistence is key unfortunately in circumstances like this. If you don't show any signs of giving up, $20 is very minimal to a bank compared to losing a person's account.

Hopefully they will find a discrepancy and fix it for you.

At this point three hours later what should I do? Go in and ask them to call me if and when they get a call saying they had an extra twenty bucks. I'm at a loss as to where to go from here.

I have no advice because I have never worked in a bank and don't know their policy. But I'm thinking if it were rolls they may refund you because the possibility of miscounting. But if they ran it through a machine I can't really see them doing anything about it. But maybe you should try. Good luck!

Well I went back in and made a formal complaint and they should be getting back to me in a week or so when they send it in.

I've had that happen a few times, but only once for an amount similar to yours. Mine was usually $5 to $10. For this reason I roll everything now. Takes longer, but it puts me more in control.

I have seen that dimes sometimes drop in the cent positions in the disbursement wheel on the counting machines. The one in particular at my credit union does this. I separated my dimes and requested that one of the tellers watch as I dropped in a roll of dimes, and the counter measured $4.55. Five dimes were counted as cents which came up with that amount.

I never run dimes through a coin counter. I always re-roll them. Where I live we have 1 bank with a coin counter, when I used to buy the penny bags I used to pull about $4-$5 worth of dimes out of each penny bag. A 9 cent loss per dime adds up quickly.
