If I remember correctly, they acquired it, flipped it, and made a nice little profit.
How many exist? I believe it's less than 5.

I know it's extremely unlikely but how would you tell the difference should you ever come across one?

Magnet. If it sticks, no good. If not, either a cast copy (most likely), or the real deal.

That is a pretty amazing coin. When did the coin sell for $72,500? Is it something recent?

So many odd types of coins floating around in change. If I remember there are also 43 and 43D Copper Lincoln Cents out there. Also, the 59 Wheat Back, 74 Aluminum Cent and many other oddities. For some reason the 43 Cent is picked on by so many people that just want to make them even more different.

Or an altered date, or a die struck fake.

The news story posted in the OP is from almost four years ago (7/28/08), and the coin it shows was found in circulation in 1944.
