Always the possibility of a slight color balance problem with pictures to the screen, but this one looks like it has been rubbed with mercury.

Electoplating is another possibility.

Either way, it should weigh the same as a standard penny.

to assume this is not a legit off metal error from the images provided may be a large error itself. Show/send it to someone "in the know." Yes, there are many examples of mercury and plated coins out there, but there are also many legitimate off metal errors from this era.

A couple of points:

1. Liquid mercury is not harmful to the touch, if you are careful and wash your hands afterwards. The real hazard is mercury vapour. When liquid mercury is spilled, it forms droplets that can accumulate in the tiniest of spaces and then emit vapors. When mercury is boiled (which was a common thing to do when placer gold mining to free the dissolved gold), those mercury vapours are extremely hazardous to inhale.

2. nickelsguy is correct. Have someone who knows errors and how coins are struck examine the item. The majority of the "internet experts" here were all too quick to condemn this coin as a coin that was post-mint altered or plated. Two (and probably more) are known to exist.

While we are on the topic, let's see what folks have to say about this coin? (It belongs to a CCF member).

sonar84, if you cannot see any trace of brown copper on the rim or within the devices of the coins, ask the board administrator to send you my email. I will gladly test your coin (non-destructive analysis by XRF & SEM) for free. The catch is - if the coin is legitimate, then the analytical results are made public.

Why not a scratch test on the rim of the coin.Any value this coin would have could only come from its value as an off-metal strike. If it scratches through to non copper the additional minor damage won't affect its value.

SPP...My take on the 1942 cent is...
-Circulated
-Cleaned
-Power was turned off on the cookie cutters therefore not allowing a full straight clip or... causing an imprint of what could have been a straight clip.

Or I am completely missing something Here!
