I decided to stray from my usual pennies & halves. It seems in the tiny town I live in, I have depleted the supply :( So, I bought a box ( $250) of dimes plus the $80 I bought earlier. I found some 2011 P &D's of course, and 3 silver, two from 1953 and one from 1964.

I normally do not do well when I am searching dimes or quarters, nickels can be hit or miss, about 50/50, I guess.

It is the remaining halves and especially pennies that I get the most interesting finds. Everything from foreign to old to some are in just amazing shape.

Are dimes really worth searching via buying them through banks? I will be travelling to a major city (woo hoo) later this month, but it will only be for one day, and I plan on making the most of it. I had planned on only getting halves & pennies, but I might stretch out to dimes if I can.

It really depends on what interests you. Silver, varieties, errors, foreign coins, etc.

Here is a good thread for some research...

R you a collector, or looking to profit. I know some people profiting from roll hunting (halves)...myself, I love the thrill of it all! It is probably cheaper to buy your silver dimes outright...but, where's the thrill in that?

Jbuck, I think I do it equally for the silver and collecting. I love having them, but if finances get tight, I'll regretfully sell them. As much as I enjoy them, family's well being will always come first.

I do have rolls of Presidential dollars. All but Fillmore, Buchanan and Arthur. I bought them from the bank at face value. Are these as good as the ones from the mint? My rolls are red and white, with the president's name on it, but it does not say whether it is P or D. I do have ONE that does, but I want to get a roll a month at least until I have them all.

fistfulladirt, pretty much I said it above. I will search a different town in the next few weeks, because I have been skunking out for some time in my town and the surrounding towns.

Actually, you asked if dimes were really worth searching.

A commendable attitude.

I think he meant above, as in what he said in response to me.

Hopefully the small town you find will not have someone who has already searched the supply.

that is what is so great about the thrill of the find fist you said it right - its easy to just go out and buy buy buy, but its more fun to find something and we will go out of the way just to even find that one silver roosie
