I recently purchased these coins at my local coin shop. I find them to be rather high quality.

I wanted to know if you guys would think the 1831 half dollar appears cleaned? In my opinion, if it was, it was a long time ago.

Also, do you guys think my 1864 2 cent piece is a woody? It has unc details, I was even thinking of sending it to get NGC graded. The weak reverse makes me think twice though.

Lastly, if I sent in my Half Cent to NGC, what grade do you guys think it would receive.

I thought I made some good buys. I have not gone coin hunting in a long time. I hope to make it a habit.

Very nice!

I am usually hesitant about giving an opinion on condition from a photo, but they look fine to me.

Nice coins. Love the Half Cent.
Welcome to the CCF ;-)

Hard to tell but my guess would be mid VF on the 1/2 Cent.

The obverse of the half does look like it may have been cleaned and has since retoned. The reverse looks more original.

I can't tell if the 2-cent piece is uncirculated. It would not be worth having it graded IMO unless it was clearly an uncirculated piece. It does appear to have original red color (easy RB and possibly RD) and the reverse has the wood-grain pattern many collectors like.

Most Half Cents have been cleaned in some manner. Your coin appears suspiciously "red" given the degree of wear but it could still be original. Larger, sharp photos taken with the coins out of the holders would be nice....

In any case, it's a nice haul to bring home. Enjoy, and welcome!

Thank for your comments everyone. This forum seems to be filled with true coin enthusiasts.

I went once more to my local coin shop and picked up this gem. Such a beautiful coin. I know it is hard to tell by the photos, but to me it appears to be AU. 1859 with a beautiful tone. Does not appear to be cleaned or polished.

Very nice. Hard to tell but I'd say upper end AU. Looks to be some remaining luster evident ;)
