I don't know yet if this is a good omen or a bad omen, but this was the third coin that fell out of the first roll from my box of halves today.

And I have no clue what it is. Any ideas?

It might be what is called a "Magician's Coin."
An ordinary coin, altered to hide another coin or whatnot during a magic trick.

Rest in Peace

It's a Magician's coin or, maybe a spy coin.

It's made in a machine shop by carefully cutting/grinding away at a coin to make the hollow spot and then cutting and grinding the opposite on another coin.

You can find them for sale at ThinkGeek.com. I think they sell for about $30 so I am surprised that it ended up out in the wild.

Then again, maybe it's a homework assignment for a shop class somewhere and the student didn't want it anymore.

I have one made from a quarter and I also have a double headed quarter.

Anyway, they're fun to have and you can always use it to hide microfilm. LOL

Where is Coop with his images. Your are missing a half. I have a cent that looks just like this. I usually find these by noticing that the reverse is rotated. Also the coin machines around here won't take the coins because the weight is off. I have probably found eight or ten, but have given most away. Sometimes you find this same type thing with nickels.

The half seems to be the pretty popular one on these magic coins.
I want one myself. Want to find it though :) Complete.
I did find a Wheat cent hollowed out obverse in a bank roll.
That has to take a lot of precision work on a lathe if done years ago. I guess today with modern CNC etc. it would be pretty easy though to do.

Pretty interesting find. Too bad the other half is missing from it.
