Sorry for all the questions tonight!

Just found a real oddity. I have two 1972 pennies in front of me, during searching, it just felt different, so I weighed it. Of course a normal 1972 weighed in at 3.1g this one weighed in at 2.4... Whats going on with it?

Acid Dipped. You can see the burns on the faces of the coin.

I know it's 6 years later, but I have been holding onto an identical 1972 penny since the late 70's. The edge looks just like yours; it makes a sound more like a quarter (tinny) and is much lighter than a regular '72. Don't buy the acid explanation. Mine looks a lot better than yours and it was certainly not dipped in acid... so something's up. Have you ever found any further info about your penny?

More images, same conclusion. Still an acid dipped coin. The surfaces show an eaten away look. (the give away) Edge are reduced as they are attacked from three sides.

alexii4,

If its identical, then most likely will be from the same or similar damage produced after strike.

If it looks a lot better as said, then that suggests its not the same. Obverse and reverse images may suggest something more. Thanks, Doug.

To CCF alexii4! You have a coin that was dipped in acid unfortunately. It shows all of the signs of being dipped in acid.
