I searched 40 boxes of Brinks plastic wrapped dimes and 40 boxes of String and Son paper wrapped dimes in the last four months to compare finds from each.

Brinks plastic wrapped:
37 total silver dimes (one in 2703).
Breakdown-27 Roosies, 5 Mercurys, and 5 80% Canadians
16 Boxes were skunks
15 Boxes had one silver
5 Boxes had two silvers
4 Boxes had three silvers
I found 0 non-silver Canadian dimes in plastic wrapped rolls

String & Son paper wrapped:
56 Total silver dimes (one in 1786)
Breakdown- 46 Roosies, 4 Mercurys, 5 80 % Canadians, 1 50% Canadian
10 Boxes were skunks
12 Boxes had one silver
10 Boxes had two silvers
8 Boxes had three silvers
I found 82 non-silver Canadian dimes in paper wrapped rolls

Overall I found 93 silver dimes equaling 6.56 ounces of silver.

Results/Comparison:
Brinks must use magnets to remove Canadians. Mercurys and silver Canadians were about the same for both. The general consensus from what I have read is that Brinks dimes do not produce as well as String and Son. I found that to be true. Brinks does produce silver, but it is significantly less with an average of fewer than one per box for me. With the clear plastic they are faster to search and they don't have non-silver Canadians, but if I had the choice I would always search a String and Son paper wrapped box of dimes because of the better silver average.

Do String and Son come from a specific bank? Only going to BofA I always get clear wraps, which I assume are brinks.

The only bank that has Brinks plastic wrapped in my area is Wells Fargo. I got String and Son boxes from many different banks.

no loomis service in my area, its garda or binks. Garda uses paper wrappers like s and s, but they arent s and s wrappers, brinks is always clear. I like brinks dimes, only have to open a few rolls per box. I'm gonna do a dime run soon. I can hit 4 banks within 10 minutes, and get 8 boxes of brinks, search in car, have wrappers ready, and replacement coins, got dump banks right between, quick way to search some brinks boxes.

@Halfhunter: I personally have never done the "Search in the car" method... yet. Some day soon on my day off I will be found running from bank to bank hunting. LOL I think what would slow me down is I have no edge searching skills, so it would be a lot of rolls to open.

Thanks for that great info!
Brinks services Coinstar machines, which reject silver.

fistfull, Thank YOU for that great info. The fact that they service coinstar is a bit of info I didn't know.

sich, Thank you for sharing your stats. One important detail to ask on the clear wrappers. Did you leave some in the plastic if you didn't see silver? What was your process? The reason I ask is because my experience tells me that the clear wrappers have a lot of dirty silver dimes. If you have really good eyes, you can pick them out as 'possible' silver WITH THE WRAPPER OFF. I've found a half dozen silvers that I didn't see until I unwrap them. Add a couple more to that that I just didn't see, and only found because I searched individually. That's in maybe 15 boxes. So significant enough to meaningfully affect stats.

I do wonder sometimes if I miss a silver dime while edge searching quickly. I do initially look through the plastic. If I see copper then I know it is not silver. If there is any question I check it. If I don't see any coin worth checking individually I open the roll and pour it into a bucket of dumps so as a last resort I could catch one with a sound check. I also look for thicker brighter rims and I have found 14 proofs plus a 1996w doing that. I've become pretty good at picking out War Nickels, buffalos, and wheat cents looking through the plastic too so my eye is trained pretty well.

I haven't kept track like this, but i'd say my finds are probably on par with your results. Plastic rolls DO produce silver, but in my experience it is less. I get skunked more often with plastic and don't find as much silver.
