Bought this token yesterday at the Eric P. Newman auction. Cheap enough for my meagre budget. NGC holder prominently identifies this as part of the Eric Newman collection. Huge collection was sold in three auctions. Newman is about 103 years old (yup, still alive). I just had to have something from this collection.
Anticosti is a favourite destination for me. Anticosti Island is in the Gulf of St.Lawrence, and is known for its deer hunting and trout fishing. Anticosti has a human population of 281 and a deer pop of 160,000 (yes, really). That is 20 per sq.km.
Anticosti Island 1/8 Penny Copper Token 1870, MS64 RB NGC. Boldly struck, with prooflike fields and considerable original red luster remaining. In 1890, a catalog was published by the Scott Stamp & Coin Co. that attributed these tokens to Anticosti Island. The reasoning for this attribution was the "A" at the top of the reverse.
