Hey, Just wondering if anyone collects a second (or third) set of something. I current have been working on 1 1953-Date penny set and was thinking on creating multiple sets (one main and others extra). I find myself having some doubles of lower mintage pennies (2003 Gold Plated, 2003WP, 1998W, etc) and not sure if I should sell them or keep them. Just wondering what everyone else does.

I like to have a 'spare' of the circulation coins where I can get one. Can be expensive though. I haven't gotten into selling anything yet but will probably sell all my triplicates and beyond for circulation and maybe some of the more valuable duplicates.

I think that's what I may do, only keep doubles of circulation coinage. Its pretty easy for me since I like buying rolls rather then single coins... At least anything from 1960-Date (Older ones get quite expensive).

I have 3 sets of fifty cent Canada coins from 1902-1967(well almost) missing a few keys.

I have one main set for me , then 3 for my kids and 7 for my grandkids, but they do help and put some in there own albums. Then I have 2 spares incase someone else pops in or should I say out.

Wow that's quite an expensive set of spare sets SHAFT lol. That's also a lot of spares mcshilling. I was thinking I was keeping a little to much sets at 4 spares but I guess a lot of people keep tons of spares. I think my spares will probably goto future kids :).

Don't underestimate the work involved in trying to dispose of coins at decent prices--either by you or perhaps your heirs. I work diligently to get rid of doubles as soon as possible unless they are useful for trading purposes.

I have several different "second sets" simply because they are from my original sets when I upgrade a coin. they are great fun when the second set is nearly complete and you hunt for the few coins needed to finish them off.

Ummm, I guess it kinda depends what you mean by second set?
I collect Canadian quarters, all types ... - a circulating set (Queen Victoria-to date) - proof sets - specimen sets
... but other than accumulating spares when I upgrade on of my quarters, I don't actually keep a second set of anything (man, there are way too many types of coins out there to collect more than one set of one type of coin, no?)
... however, I have never sold any of my upgrade-spares (even the dawg-coins have some personal attachment ... I'd rather keep them, than sell 'em)
=> oh, but I have given a few of my spares away as CCF contest prizes!! (but that seemed okay, because from what I've seen, the majority of the CCF folk would give them a very good home)

so far it hasn't been to bad getting rid of extra coins... granted they are not super rare/expensive. Just been purchasing rolls and choosing the best for me and selling the rest. I don't really see making a second set of anything other then the 1952 or older for pennies and the silver for the other denominations.

I am trying to put together a set of AU (minimum) Large Cents, and I keep buying dates that I already have in my collection, but if I can get another nice example at a good price, I buy it. So I guess I am going to end up with more than one set by the way things are going so far.

I look forward getting into the older stuff but I don't think i'll be doing a spare set (to much money). Currently just working on Queen Eliz. sets starting form the penny.
