This is some of my NC Confederate currency. I had started just collecting this state since I was born there. I haven't worked on it much in a while though. Image: nc2.jpg90.27 KB

Here is a $5 confederate bill. This one had been cancelled. It has some X punches in it. They are hard to see unless you hold it up to the light. BenVA Image: confederate5bill.jpg75.51 KB

Thanks for posting these. There is so much history in these notes. The Confederate and Southern Civil War State issues are specialities around which extensive collections can be formed.
Both areas have excellent new books with comprehensive and up to date information. Hugh Shull just released a great book called "A Guide Book of Southern States Currency" published by Whitman. "Collecting Confederate Paper Money" by Pierre Fricke and published recently by RM Smythe is the most detailed book ever written on CSA notes. I highly recommend both. -Russell Kaye, Sellitstore

Are they easy to obtain and are they expensive.
I am always looking for something new and interesting to collect.

"Notes from countries that didn't issue coins" are the only banknotes I seriously collect nowadays. I only have one genuine Confederate note, a $5 "blueback": Front and backBought it off ebay from a US seller. They're fairly easy to get, but not cheap - I had to wait a long time before obtaining a nice condition note for under US$50. There's lots of imitation ones out there, too, and some of these reproductions are more convincing than others. I had a Confed $1 note in my collection for years (found it in a bargain box at a local coin show in the 1980's), pretty worn and tatty-looking, but it had pride of place in my collection until I showed it to a dealer who declared it to be a repro.

Yes, they are easy to obtain from dealers, flea markets, etc. Decent CSA notes start at $20-$25, while State issues start at $10-$20.

How does one tell the authentic notes from the copies?
Are there any books or articles that I can purchase to read up on Confederate Notes?
