Why is the s mint mark so close to the 5 in the date. I have another 1953 s that is not nearly that close. I included a picture of the other 1953 s for comparison fist pic is the one in question. In the second pic is that doubling I see on the 9,5,3 and the y in liberty?

The mintmarks were hand punched until 1990....they can be all over the place.

Tough call on the DBLing your seeing .

Personally cant make it out looking at the photos ..

Did you happen to check out CopperCoins link about Hub Vs Machine Doubling ?

If not . I really suggest reading it and re-reading it .Print it and read on rainy days just to get it to STICK he has the Drawing also to go along with his "Explanation" He is one of the BEST in the error coin aspect (My honest opinion).
I'm always referring to it(daily or whenever roll hunting)

Priceless info just take a bit to get used to the difference -

Here is his Post- Machine Vs Hub Doubling -- ENJOY

Only the mint-mark is doubled. It's known as an RPM (re-punched mintmark). The doubling occurred when the mint-mark was added to the die. A doubled die occurs when the die is first made.
