I saw an NGC slabbed Morgan VAM-5, and I am trying to determine its value.

The first line of the slab states: 1887 O TOP-100 S$1 (I do not know why it has an "S" before $1.)

The second line states: VAM-5 DDO STARS MS 63

Is this worth anything more than a regular slabbed MS63 that is not a VAM?

The Top 100 was the first interest-related VAM list, created many years ago, and is not necessarily a reflection of either rarity or demand. There are some pretty common varieties in the Top 100, and this is one of them. NGC alone has slabbed over 150 VAM-5's in MS63.

With that said, the latest die state of this variety has a striking combination of a radial die crack through the B in PLURIBUS, and rim Cuds on the lower obverse, which is scarce indeed and easily worth a premium.

Thanks, Dave. You said the VAM-5 in question is one of the "common varieties," but I am not sure what you mean by "the latest die state of this variety has a striking combination of a radial die crack through the B in PLURIBUS, and rim Cuds on the lower obverse, which is scarce indeed and easily worth a premium."

I take it to mean the VAM-5 in question does not have a radial die crack through the B and rim Cuds on the obverse.

Is that correct, and do VAMs with "a radial die crack through the B in PLURIBUS, and rim Cuds on the lower obverse" have a different VAM number, or are they VAM-5s?

For 1887-O :
VAM-5 is a Doubled Stars variety.
VAM-5A is the same as VAM-5, but later die state where the die has developed a radial rim Cuds under the date.
VAM-5B is even later than 5A, where the die has developed further with a radial crack and more rim Cuds.

Vamworld is a good reference.

Below are links to the 5 and 5B with pics. Most vams DO NOT have pics on VW but is a good reference source and once you get familiar with the site it's easy figure you way around.

I wanted to address this kind of question you had, the "S" in front of the $1 stands for "Silver" so it means its a Silver Dollar
