The ones looking forward or backwards is left up to an individuals perspective. You do bring up a good point however. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which way the person depicted on the obverse faces. Some of our early coinage had the person facing right, as well as the Native American on the Buffalo nickle, and Mrs. Anthony on the SBA dollar. I guess it was left up to the engraver to decide what they wanted to do.

That's interesting ... their direction seems a bit random, eh?

In Canada, it is a bit more systematic ... the left-right orientation switches each time a new monarch is coined!!

NOTE => Edward VIII "Abdicated" and decided to chase Mrs. Simpson rather than become the King of England ... but apparently they still counted Eddie-VIII in the ol' Portrait-switcheroo!! ... below, is a portrait of Prince Eddie-VIII on a $5 bill ... Eddie-VIII would have been facing right, so they ended-up facing his younger brother (King George VI) to the left ... get it?

Jefferson now faces the same direction that Lincoln does, so now there's a divide. Among the main circulating coins bigfredd has pictured, half face forward (Lincoln, Jefferson) and the other backward (Washington, Roosevelt).

When the patterns were prepared Edward insisted that the tradition of opposing facing was broken, for he considered facing left was more flattering to him. Bertie (KG6) "restored" the tradition.

Abe would have to be shrunk down pretty far.
