Just started coin collecting (again!) from scratch and I am looking to collect silver eagles and mod commemoratives graded ms69. Only looking for unc (no proofs). Would like to purchase coins that have some small chance at future appreciation. Budget is modest at 1k to 2k. Any opinions on which coins I should focus on? Thank you.

Welcome to Coin Community, jeff46. It's nice to have you among us. However, your question is a little hard to answer - it would be difficult to "narrow" your focus any tighter than you've already expressed it. However, I'm sure someone who is much more enthusiastic about Moderns than I (that would be almost anyone ) will be along shortly to help in more detail. Are you looking for specific issues or years in which to concentrate? The right grading service to choose? PCGS, in my opinion, if you're looking to future value.

I am not real sure I would put the extra money into slabbed moderns when you can pick up high grade coins, in most instances, for far less money. If the need arises at a later date you could always have them graded and slabbed then?

Thank you for your responses. I only want to buy graded coins since most of my purchasing will be on ebay (previous exp with ebay on other collectibles makes me comfortable there). There is approx 15 mod commems I like such as the 93 world war II, 94 vietnam mem, 96 smithsonian, 97 robinson and 01 buffalo. I also love the walking lib design on the silver eagles. I am trying to stay with coins in which I admire the design. In a little older coins, I like the Morgans, walking lib halfs, and franklin halfs. Again, budget is a little tight, need to start slow, but dont want to mess with non-graded stuff. Do not want to deal with grading on my own. Thank you all for listening and please give me your opinions on the direction I should take.

A nice set of BU ASE's shouldn't hurt that budget too much! If you like bullion a set of CN ML's would also be nice. If you can find the commens in BU you'll be ahead of the game. Remember to buy the coin and not the slab!

The only problem with collecting modern commemoratives (which I do) is that sooner or later you will have to start collecting the old half dollar commemoratives.
I got the half dollar bug and have picked up a few recently.
The 2 reasons I collect commemoratives (both old and new) are first, the designs are AWESOME, and second most have a low mintage.
have fun searching

Have you thought of collecting commemoratives from other countries? Some of them can be obtained for a very good price and the value often climbs quicker than American coins. By the way welcome to the forum and to help you out - you said you only had 1 or 2 Ks to spend Here are a few more KKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK Seriously we hope you enjoy your stay here.

My only suggestion would be to make sure and buy current issues directly from the mint website. http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ntifier=4000I know that sounds like captain obvious...but some people must not know this.....what else could explain the recent market for flipping moderns that are still available at the mint?

I would second what Errorcoins said. I couldn't finish a modern commem set before I started buying the old halves. Good luck on the (re)start and do but new issues from the mint. I overheard a guy tell another coin shop customer that he always remembers to come in and get the new ones from the shop!

First of all, welcome to the forum jeff! Now for the question of what to collect with potential of raising in value. I happen to believe that rggoodie's suggestion for collecting foreign commemoratives is your best bet. You will have any number of coins and countries to collect from and all of them are normally better priced. Good luck in which ever path you decide to fallow.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! Definitely going to look at the foreign commemoratives. Something I never thought of. By the way, are CN ML's shorthand for Canadian Maple Leafs? By the way, this is one very friendly and helpful board!!

jeff46, I have some of the items you are looking for, but rather than me sending you a list, please let me know what you are looking for in particular and maybe I will have it. In accordance with the Forum rules you cannot sell or trade, but may buy. Therefore anything that you want will strictly be on a buy basis until you get the 50 posts. I would love to have another commemorative collector on board, especially someone new to the hobby and I would be willing to help you get started at very reasonable costs. So email me a list of some of the items you want. Berry

If you like the American Silver Eagle design ( ASE for short) you may want to look into Walking Liberty half dollars, which have an almost identical obverse and a more attractive (IMHO) reverse. These can be bought slabbed in AU-Low MS for about the same price as ASE's, and contain close to half an ounce of silver, but their value isn't solely dependent on silver prices. Welcome!

Jeff, I have a posting up to sell silver coins under the Sell Thread.I think if you respond to that you should be able to contact me. Bobby will be reviewing this thread and if not permissible, I will ask the moderator how you may contact me. Keep looking if you can't email me through the sell thread. Berry
