I found this error nickle while hunting rolls a few days ago. I am very excited about it as it is my first really cool nickle find. I have been looking for anything that resembles it,and have had no luck in my search. Does anyone have an insight on what this type of error is called?

Attached are a few photos .

to CCF. I am no pro but to me it looks like PMD (post mint damage) I am sure a pro will be along soon with input.

To CCF -

with john1 , also looks to me to be PMD .. Just really strange notches that I cant think of a way that it would have came out of the mint like that ..

Interesting find , but my gut wants to say Post Mint Damage ..

Best of luck on your searching .!! And again to CCF ..

Thank you for your insight! My thoughts were that it could be post mint, but what is keeping my hopes up with this coin is that the inner layer of the cut is smooth ans shiny like the rest of the coin. I am not familiar with the minting process in it's entirety , but have fathomed the thought of this being an error during the waffling process. The marks resemble the sizing of the indents made during the waffling process. I was thinking that maybe the end of the waffle machine may have landed on the coin and somehow created the coin I have found......Or, I really want it to be something great and I am not ready to get passed the stage of denial just yet and enter acceptance. LOL
Rest in Peace

TLAllison welcome to the forum. Your idea is interesting but I agree with the above posts. This is not an error. It is post mint damage. I can't see where this is from the waffle machine. I think if this really were from the waffle machine then I would expect it to shear off the pieces giving the same look you see at the edge of a clipped error. It sounds like your coin was ground and not sheared. Also I think the waffle process is a separate process and is not part of the coin making process. I believe it is only used to disfigure coins and then those coins are sold as scrap.

Thank you again for the Welcome, and for your insight! I am ready to accept that this nickle is PMD and move forward ,although I don't understand why someone would ruin money. Rude people we live in this world with I suppose.

I also have this quarter I found a few months ago. I am going to send it in to be graded although it is another that I haven't been able to find any info on. I will be posting it in the right forum here in a few, but wanted to share it with those of you who are my first friends here in the coin community.
It is a 1974 quqrter and the I in the word In somehow landed slanted to make it form the letter W. So it appears to read "W God We Trust"

The quarter was damaged by a Coin Wrapping Machine. Note the I is parallel to the rim. Happens probably twice on every roll.
