So ever since I jumped on the PM train my wife has hated the fact that I'm spending money on PMs and doesn't even want to hear about it. You may have seen me mention this in a few other threads. In spite of me trying to educate her on why I feel this is a good idea, she still doesn't care. She has humored me and listened to a few of my rants and she is understanding more and more but still very slowly. So I just do my thing, keep my purchases small and deal with " the look" when another package shows up at the door. I have been a smoker for about 17 years now and have tried almost everything to quit. I've made it too 5 months a few times only to fall off the bandwagon. My costs of smoking , financially is close to $250 a month. Ouch! So there is a new deal on the table. Since I started collecting PMs, I've been bitten hard by the silver bug. I follow reports, charts, forums, constantly watch for the best deals, and coin roll hunt. That takes up a lot of time but I enjoy the reads, opinions and the hunt. My wife sees this and made me an offer. From here on in, if I quit smoking, I can spend 70% of what I was already spending on cigarettes on silver. She said that even though she would put the money somewhere else, at least it would be a motivator to quit and at least the money is " invested" and not just blown away on nothing, and I wouldn't even have to talk to her about a purchase and she wouldn't give me any looks or even question me about it. The catch is..... if I fall off the wagon and start up full time again, every piece of silver that I have accumulated since quitting has to be sold off and she gets to put the money wherever she wanted it to go. She did say that I get to sell it to reduce losses though. If I fall off for a week.... the previous months purchases go into confiscation and she would give one back as my next purchase for being back on track. I'm all game for it. Its a win win situation for me and my family. Its also nice to know she's actually taken in some things that I've been explaining to her. Just wanted to share. My first day no smoking is scheduled for June 18th. Day after fathers day and 2 days after my daughters 5th birthday. Cant wait to stack silver in the open lol.

Good plan by replacing a bad most unhealthy act with a much more productive one IMO. Keep us posted on the progress of the accumulating silver an staying on the wagon....
When you get real weak an are about to cave, first remember those new creepy smoking commercials with the most sad smoking victims with the voice boxes, an secondly picture the wife with a new sofa, which was once a couple of 10 oz. stackers, lol.....

Hahah, I should start smoking, then tell me wife i'd quit if I can buy more silver :)
Careful though. If you follow the volatile silver market religiously enough, a smoke or two or a pack will be down right irresistible during big dips in prices :P

When I gave up with my wife we both put 1 pound into a jar each day. The first person to fail gave all the cash to the other to do as they wish. Of course I won and my wife still spent it, but never the less - your plan sounds like a good one. When I was a smoker, I used to hate ex-smokers, too smug. Now I am a ex-smoker, I still hate them - turns out that they were just not nice people! But, one bit of advice I will give you, you never stop smoking, you just take a day off. That day off might turn into 2, then 10, then 40... You will probably slip. That is the addition, just give up again for the next day. Good luck to you.

Congratulations, and good luck with the smoking thing!
My wife was on board with silver until I bought a monster box of silver maples at just under $31 after which prices plummeted to (and have so far remained at) around $27-28. She just will not let me forget that I "wasted" over $1500 by not waiting a few days, and it doesn't help matters that she actually told me to wait for awhile before buying. Now she has basically forbidden me to buy anything else until the end of the year unless it drops precipitously and stays low for at least a couple of months.
Ah well, at least I have that monster box to keep me company...

I think that is a great ultimatum, you are saving money by buying silver, then quitting a life threatening addiction. Congrats!

Sounds like a win win to me.
My wife doesn't care as long as there is food on table and gas in the tank.

Sounds like a good idea to me. If you think youre going to have a moment of weakness pull out all the silver you have and imagine how peeved off you would be with yourself when all the silver is gone and youre tripping over all the new shoes around the house.

Almost makes you want to smoke twice as much before quitting. 75% of $250 is $175... 75% of $500 is $350.

Haha...love the posts guys...very funny :-). Thank you all for your thoughts, advice, wisdom, experiences and encouragement. I will for sure keep you all posted. I have to decide what coin to carry around with me for a physical reminder and motivator. My stop smoking date was picked because of the importance of the 2 days before that date. As well I'm using the time as a way to try and break the habit of sparking up during particular part of the days. You ex smokers will know exactly what I mean. Thank you all again! Cheers!
