Congrats, Sam, on trying to get the wife on-board with your silver collecting passion. Most wives have a hard time with this, so your troubles are not at all unusual. You can tell by the large number of guys and the few number of gals on this web site that it is primarily a "guy thing". To most of the ladies, money is what they can take to the stores and get stuff! OK, that IS one definition for it, I grant. OTOH, PMs are more than just money. They are also insurance against bad times and, as we all know, bad times WILL come to us at some point, either in our lives or our children's lives. As it often quoted on many web sites, it is better to have and not need then to need and not have. PMs definitely fall into this category. I am a little surprised that your wife did not suggest deducting X amount of silver for each day that you fall off the smokers wagon. That would be fair, would it not? It would serve as additional encouragement to get back on the smoke-free train for sure. As to smoking... yes, it IS an addictive drug and if it had to be injected it would be illegal. In fact, it is only legal because the gov gets mucho dinero via taxes on it and will not willingly give that up. That said, I am 62 years old, don't smoke, and EVERYONE I know but 1 who smoked is now dead... and he coughs like a guy with 1 foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. The non-smokers are living healthy lives well into their 80s and even 90s. The wife of my closest associate at work (before I retired) died a couple of years ago at age 58 from smoking-related cancer. That's awfully young to be checking out of this hotel and it is completely unnecessary. Best of luck to you in kicking this very bad habit. You will be FAR better off without it.

Thanks ed_ b. In my op it does say that she will take x amount of silver away, though it is not a day by day thing. Maybe a few things to work out. I assume that if I fall off the train for a week...my months purchases are gone...but I guess I can say that for each day she can take 5 silver dimes just to make it more painful for me. :-) sad thing is this means I have to hand my stash over to her.

One carton of cigs = two ASE's or silver Maples. Keep repeating that!

If youre only going to lose a small portion of the silver each time you fall off it will be tempting to have a break. All or nothing. All that shiny stuff is too good to give up then.

Smoking is a filthy habit that only leads to misery and, typically, ugly death. Kinda like staying married. j/k.
But good luck, Sam. I used to throw away my friends' packs of cigs when I saw them lying around. They weren't too happy about it but that was too bad. I did just about anything one can imagine to help them quit. Out of the three, two kicked the habit and have been cig free for many, many years. The third didn't. Unfortunately, he's in awful, awful shape after more than 20 years on the death cylinders. Couldn't run to the exit without keeling over if his house was on fire. His breath is so foul, I sit by a fan when he's visits. He coughs like someone vomiting. His voice sounds like the Cryptkeeper. But he won't quit. 1-2 packs a day. It adds up fast and smoker's have nothing to show for it but lungs that look like two shriveled black sacks of... you know the rest.
I truly hope this silver plan works but how does your wife keep track of you when you're out and about without her?

You MUST keep repeating: One carton of cigs = two ASE's or silver maples! Walk around the house, and repeat over and over, while you are sleep walking!

I don't lie to my wife I just find a need to tell her everything about every investment I make.
Great job stopping the smoking, that is tough.

Man, just talking about smoking (good or bad) makes me want to light-up a smoke!! I haven't had a single drag during the past 3.5 years, yet I still get all freaky if "that feeling" creeps-up on me (the nic-fit usually happens when I'm drinking and/or after a big fattening meal => so it pretty much happens every day!!) ... ha Anyway ... luckily during the other 95% of the day, I no longer even think about smoking ... and honestly, after a certain period of time, those feelings start to become quite infrequent (*phew, thank God*) ... Added degree of difficulty points => My wife still smokes ... and still smokes in the house and freely around me!! (how's that for will-power that I never thought I had, eh?) ... luckily for her (and me), other than her smoking-habit she is the sweetest and hottest thing around!! (so I don't try too many idle threats ... hopefully she'll quit when she's ready ... she stills makes attempts every now and then) blah-blah-blah => anyway, stick to your new plan and start buying-up your PMs ... then if you fall off of the wagon somewhere along the way, I guess you'll have to choose between your wife and/or your big pile of new coins!!

Quote: Thanks ed_ b. You're more than welcome, Sam. Hang in there, man. We're ALL pulling for you! Quote: sad thing is this means I have to hand my stash over to her. If it gets you smoke-free, it will have been worth it! Short story... many years ago, I was in a hospital bed hatching a kidney stone. While I was there, they put an old man (probably in his 60s, lol) in the same room with me. This was a 4-bed mini-ward, so no problem for space. Anyway, this guy was dying from emphysema. He had the nastiest, gurgling, wracking cough from he** as anyone can imagine. His daughter and son-in-law would come to visit him a couple of times a day. Every second of the time they were there, he begged them for a smoke... I mean this literally, with crying and everything, but they refused every request. It was all I could do not to scream at them, "For heaven's sake, give him a smoke. It can't possible hurt him now!". But I didn't. I just put a pillow over my head so I couldn't hear all that racket. He died the 3rd night I was there. I am sure that it was a relief to everyone. Ever since then, I have never even thought of smoking. It truly does result in a living he** for anyone who does it and for their loved ones. Blessings to any and all who manage to free themselves from this devilishly addictive substance. Sam & TBK... excellent policy about not lying to your wife. That is my policy as well and I have kept it for the past 45 years. This includes the 3 years before we got married when she was my GF and then my fiance. It is a policy that has worked wonderfully well. She believes in this too, which is why it works for both of us. It is a wonderful thing to be married to your true love and to not ever have to worry or wonder if there are secrets between you.

Man ... sometimes I still really miss smoking, big-time!!
One of my favorite things in the world used to be cranking-up the stereo and air-guitaring to old rock tunes ... sadly, without 1/2 a pack of smokes and a couple of beers, it just ain't the same anymore (I guess some things are just better with cigarettes?)

Inspiring story, wish you luck with it. Everytime you think of a cigarette, just remember that's 6 oz. of Ag in bar form thrown away every month, or in five months you can amass a roll of Maple Leaves that you have thrown away on cigarettes. $175/month adds up pretty darn quickly & when you have stacks and stacks of physical silver on your desk, it's an indescribable feeling. I started with a single ASE back in 1992, and then socked away at least $25 of silver every month for the next 15 years. Better than $$$$ in the bank.

Sounds like a very creative deal with your wife. Swap the cigarette habit for the silver habit, and you'll be a big winner in the long run.
