It occurred to me some time back that some posted "roll finds" are actually from a coin shop or ebay, then photo'ed and posted as a "roll find" , why would someone do this? I don't know, maybe to have a few minutes of the spotlight! for example (one I made up for illustration purposes, would not use an actual case lest I cast doubt on a particular individual) posting as a "roll find" a BU 1955 Lincoln double die; or a Liberty bust half (in AU condition!) from a roll of halves. Am I being too critical, hard headed, dubious, incredulous or whatever the term is?

I'm still pretty new here, but I have seen examples of what you are talking about. As a first glance, gut reaction, I mostly assume it is a user who didn't understand the thread was for roll finds, or a veteran member accidentally posting in the wrong thread.
Sometimes those threads can get a bit off topic (but not much).
I don't see any real point to someone posting like that on purpose, except as you said to get the spotlight for a few minutes.

You'd be amazed at what you can find in rolls. I think most of the finds are legit. Don't know why someone would lie about it.

Are you saying you've found this to be the case or you presume it to be the case? Assuming you found it...what prompted you to turn investigator and start checking the source for pictures?

Oooo let's go on a witch hunt for liars and falsifiers.
Or let's just enjoy the story real or false and hope for the same fortune

Who cares lol if someone wants to lie about what they found in a roll, so be it. The real hunters will still hunt and make their finds, and post their honest finds :)

very strange if you find it thats great if not then we "roll searchers dont mention it" lying about finding something seems really empty to me

Ive found many valuable coins in circulation over the years. I'm not talking thousands just a few hundred dollar coins. People are finding 1992 CAMs and thats a pretty good find. The older coins with high premiums its possible but very very very rare. Whether the person found it in circulation or not well I always like a good story whether its true or not. Cant tell a good story if youre not a good BSer. I only look through circulation for coins for it does make a better story than buying one at a store plus its alot cheaper.

I found a 1932 D in a super high grade for being in the wild and can honestly say if I were in your shoes I would have thought the same thing. But have come to realize how many peoples coins end up out in circulation. At any give time during the week people are finding proofs of any denomination. I no longer see it as bogus when someone finds something really good they are just really lucky. https://goccf.com/t/74084&whichpage=23

Owassokie,
I never stated that I have started checking the source for pics, never stated that I found this to be the case, no- didn't investigate anything; just posted a thought that (in my words) "occured" to me. Now when someone posts that they found a GSA encapsulated CC Morgan in a roll of nickels I think the obvious will be obvious.

I personally found a $1 Zimbabwe coin in a half dollar roll. If one of those things can be found in a roll, I would expect pretty much anything has a chance.

Basicbob, You started off by saying: It occurred to me some time back that some posted "roll finds" are actually from a coin shop or ebay, then photo'ed and posted as a "roll find" , why would someone do this? I don't know, maybe to have a few minutes of the spotlight! Then you followed that with a hypothetical. So don't act like I'm putting words in your mouth. I asked because your post wasn't very clear to me. OO
