First coin I've bought, NGC graded ... mostly looking for your own opinion more than what you think they gave it, but both is good.

I have no way of getting clearer pics but these seem to show pretty well all the marks that I see in hand. It's a little hard to see the detail of Liberty's head though.

MS63. She is a beauty too! The three leaves (not entirely) are there but I don't see the "ear hole" for a Full Head designation.

Slight weakness on Liberty's hair, maybe a slightly weak strike in this area.
I'll go with MS63 also.

Just imagine when ALL of these were new into circulation, without bag marks!

Thanks guys - I appreciate your input and the kind words .

I just got back home and managed to get a pretty solid picture of Liberty's head. Before I post the grade (which will be very soon I promise) I wanted a few of you to get a chance to see this pic and let me know if you now feel it meets the FH requirements. The coin's value depends a lot on this so I want to be sure I understand the difference between "almost FH" and "barely FH" before I move on.

FH requires three leaves, a fully-defined hair edge from forehead back to the neck, and a visible "ear hole". Looks like this one qualifies. Surfaces are pretty mark-free and luster seems strong. I'd guess MS-64FH, and a nice one at that!

Looks like it meets the requirements for FH. My final guess will be MS-63 FH. Here is the link to a PCGS article describing the requirements for FH.

Nice close-up on the head detail...I would concur on the FH designation...still sticking with MS63 though. Really nice (unofficial Type III) recessed date!

MS62FH

Could go a lot higher but I'd need much higher resolution photos to be sure.

Thanks again to all for the follow up on the FH designation... here it is:

1927-SLQ-Graded-By-NGC

My own opinion before I posted this thread (after inspecting the coin in-hand) was MS63 FH too. I understand the pictures aren't the best but at least no one said MS61 or MS60 so I'm happy . I got the coin for $240 and I'm very pleased with the eye appeal ... solid luster and no heavy marks/hairlines.

I'm aware of the requirements for a FH designation but what I wasn't sure of is what actually constitutes an "ear hole". Does it need to be visible to the naked eye, and/or be of a certain size? Neither PCGS nor NGC comment on that. Fortunately I can see the ear hole on this coin without magnification (looking at it closely in-hand that is), but I was still curious about this for future reference.

Also what do you guys think - what counts as an ear hole if it were going into your personal collection? Is it acceptable if it is only visible under say 10x or 15x magnification?

Looks better than 62, but I do see a tiny rim cut on the obverse at 2:30. Maybe that was enough to knock the grade down a point (or 2).

I agree that it looks nicer than a 62.
