I have a (hopefully) quick, easy question regarding some of the mintage figures in the Red Book. I've looked all over the book but can't seem to find the answer. It's probably there; I'm certainly just missing it but I figured it would be faster to ask than read the thing cover to cover. Occasionally you'll see figures in parentheses next to the mintage #. For instance, for 1950-51 Franklin halves the listing looks like: 1950.......... (51,386) ... 7,742,123 1950D...................... 8,031,600 1951.......... (57,500) .. 16,802,102 1951D...................... 9,475,200
What are the values in parenthesis? I can only imagine that is a proof mintage figure. If so, does that represent a part of the total mintage or additional mintage? Thanks!

I've wondered this too. I think it is proofs that were minted, but we shall wait for the correct answer :)

The numbers in parentheses are proof mintages and I believe that is separate from circulation mintage.

Yes, they are proofs and are separate from the regular mintage numbers.

Thanks, guys! Any idea if that's in a legend somewhere in the Red Book? If so, where?

Not a legend, but a mention. It is buried in the Introduction. Welcome to Numismatics section, at the end of subsection Quantities of Coins Struck.

Aren't proofs only San Francisco mints? If so why wouldn't they just list the mint type S?

Because... 1. Before 1965, proofs were made in Philadelphia; most of the time right along side circulation strikes (some proof only years exist). 2. Both proof and circulation strike S-Minted cents were made from 1968 to 1974, nickels from 1968 to 1970, and dollars from 1979 to 1981. 3. S-Minted circulation strike (NIFC) 40% silver quarters (1976), half dollars (1976), and dollars (1971-1976) exist. I hope I got it all.

The same question came up in the paat and someone found where it was stated that numbers in ( ) were for proofs. Odd if you have the lastest edition of the Red Book, page 8 says how to use this book, and that is not there or I missed it. There is a sort of brief explanation of proofs on page 9 and more on page 343 yet no explanation of why the numbers in ( ) are for Proofs. It's there somewhere. Must be Whitman's way to make people read the entire book.

jbuck, right you are! Thanks. Found it on page 21 of the 2012 Red Book, last sentence of the "Quantities of Coins Struck" section as you suggested.
