I have looked at this cent through various methods and my best guess is 1797. Is there anything you can see to help?

Welcome aboard! This oldtimer is unable to help you on this one. It's what I call a hole-filler as it'll fit easily into any album hole, including that pesky, often empty 1799 hole!

I'm new to this but I have a few KG 1 large coppers and to get a date off them I put them in veg oil for a day and then wipe them off and take a picture with the light coming in from one side so it sheds a shadow over the coin. hope this helps.

Based on the little remaining hair that I can see the date ranges from 1796-1807. Thats my best guess its really difficult to tell.

In hand I might be able to tell more, but from just these pictures with only one direction of lighting, (and the fact that the obv is rotated from its standard upright position) all I can tell is that it is probably from the 1796 to early 1798 period.

It Definitely looks like a 179?. I have been studying it under various methods so far my best guesses are (in order) 1797, 1799

Check out the 1916 Mercury dime thread it might give you some ideas to determine the date.

Ok, let's be nice. It's probably a coin he dug himself and is proud of it. Definitely a draped bust. Date is up to the imagination. Even if there is a slight identifiable mark, it's a cull. Let's call it a dateless 1799.
