In celebration of our countries upcoming 236th birthday, I thought I'd share a couple Colonials bearing that date

First, a quote from John Adams:

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

Thanks for sharing Dave. Seeing your coins and trying to connect them to what was going on in 1776 is so exciting. I really wish the coins could talk. We would have so much to learn.

1 Reale/ Charles III
Spanish-Colonial

From what I understand, this was the predecessor of the U.S. Dime, valued at 12.5 cents at the time.
I'm more educated on U.S. Colonials.

Amazing coins.

I just sit and wonder:

Who held them? What did they buy? How many purses and pockets and drawers have they occupied?

I guess John Adams was only two days off. 4th of July sure did help his brewer buddy Samuel Adams though.

Neat looking coins though.
Now does anyone have a US coin dated about 1630?
Now that would be worth a lot. And if it had Lincoln's face on it too.

I figure most colonials were used as some point to pay for beers between Washington, Franklin, Jefferson and Madison. Cuase of course they all had time to relax and drink a room temperature one.
